Two things working against a team like ORU. And each one of those programs are traditionally much stronger and much more of an appeal for an ESPN-selected tournament. And I 100% agree with you about the conference push and the connection with ESPN rights. So surprising that rather than admit an overreach, you would instead double-down on the likes of TOWSON being chosen for one of these tournaments due to their rabid fan base that travels so well. Look, I get that (for whatever reason) ORU does not carry much caché with The Worldwide Leader In Sports; for reasons unknown. I would suggest it might have something to do with ORU's mission, but then there's goofy ol' Liberty right there in the mix of one of those tournament fields, which I have the guts to admit blows my theory right out of the water (though their presence might, to support your argument, have a LITTLE something to do with being arguably "local fare" - which explains why I didn't include them in my list). But, PLEASE don't try to convince me or anyone else that TOWSON gets the nod over ORU due to their "much bigger living alumni base". That's like saying a commuter school such as IUPUI has a greater fan-following than ORU due to their so-called "enrollment". If you want me to go through team by team and rationalize why each team was selected by ESPN over ORU I can try that, but honestly that’s a waste of time. Tradition, fan support, conference affiliation, regional geography, 3-year NET ranking/RPI average, Athletic Department relationship, matchup desires and matchup issues, past success in other ESPN tournaments, travel budget, etc etc all are factored in to ESPN controlling who plays in their events. The crazy thing is you, @Old Titan, know all of this. Yet you want to nitpick about Towson or Liberty and argue just for the sake of arguing. Let me know when a team from a conference ranked 22-32 ever get selected to play in an ESPN event where all 3 games are played on a neutral court and high major teams are in the field. It won’t happen. ESPN would lose credibility with the High Major teams/coaches the second one of them got matched up with a LM team and lost. It’s MTE promoter suicide to tick off a P5 school(s) by putting under-qualified schools in the field. Money talks and they earn money from the big dogs. And trust me, those Big 12, SEC, ACC schools in those fields want to play as many other P5 schools and similar MM+ conference schools as possible. They get the Summit League schools and below at home, they don’t want to face them on a neutral court in the middle of a thanksgiving break when their teams aren’t as focused anyway! I'll say this much: it's INCREDIBLY frustrating as a season ticket holder and pedestrian donor to again be confronted with the "we're not traditional/fan-supported/conference-affiliated/geographically-desirable/successful/QUALIFIED enough" attitude regarding scheduling. What if our coaches took the same approach with recruiting, self-relegating themselves to only the D1 leftover scraps? What if our student-athletes took a cavalier approach against top-flight competition because they didn't think they were good enough to win? Or our fundraising efforts were skewed only toward smaller targets because "we're not blah-blah-blah" enough? What if when the "mystery donor" stepped up in Indy, Tim Johnson had only floated the "Bronze Level" idea instead the Silver and Gold packages, because he didn't think ORU was worthy of more? If ANYONE in Athletics is taking that sort of attitude re: men's basketball scheduling, then it's no wonder ORU can not get the schedule its fans want, and its players deserve. Not to get too preachy, but I gotta admit being reminded of Revelations 3:15-16, one of my favorite passages that packs both inspiration and a warning for us all: "I know your works, you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either hot or cold! So, because you are lukewarm and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth." Here's to the hotness! Maybe we can start the conference schedule after the first of the calendar year and find anything better than a #300 RPI-rated team to fill two games in December.
