ORU vs. Duke

The biggest question is how does ORU handle Duke's size.  They start a front line consisting of a 6'8 forward and basically two 7 foot centers.  Kareem may have to match up with one of those 7 footers.  If you compare the Eagles's top 8 vs Duke's  top 8 then the Blue Devils have 18 inches on the Eagles!  Duke may be the biggest team in all of college basketball!  I cannot remember the Eagles facing a team that tall in 20 years!

How do you game plan for all that size?  Somehow ORU will need to turn Duke over and get some fast break points.  Also, hitting some 3s is going to be of utmost importance.

Agreed, they are huge! I’m wondering if Kareem will take Filopowski as he is a threat to drive and shoot threes(Similar player to Grant Nelson) while Connor will take their other 7 footer who is a rim runner, not a three point threat. Dukes guards will have their hands full with Max and Mackie. We have feasted all year on young guards but Dukes will be a step up for sure.

And another thing they better box out real well!!

It is another David vs Goliath type of match up but we all know how that turned out!  Also, the last time ORU was on CBS vs Ohio state and they pulled out one of the biggest wins in school history.  This one would be even bigger!

Our advantage is age and experience, and it's a big advantage. 5 of the 7 players with most playing time are freshman.

Duke

33.0 min J. Roach G 6'2 Junior
29.2 min T. Proctor G 6'5 Freshman
29.0 min K. Filipowski C 7'0 Freshman
27.0 min M. Mitchell F 6'8 Freshman
20.1 min D. Whitehead F 6'7 Freshman
19.8 min D. Lively II C  7'1 Freshman
18.4 min R. Young C 6'10 Senior

vs

ORU

M. Abmas G 6'0 Senior
I. McBride G 6'2 Junior
K. Thompson G 6'5 Senior
C. Vanover F 7'5 Senior
C. Jurgens G 6'5 Senior
P. Mwamba F 6'7 Junior
D. Weaver F 6'7 Senior

This game has upset written all over it.

Mike Ogan did a great job cutting and pasting from our Wikipedia page.

Although I was not wanting a duke matchup, our guys can still win if we play our A Game and no more “scouting errors” that we had during the season.

recipe will be similar to last time we were here, take care of the ball, good defense, and hot shooting from the outside. Max simply cannot be driving haphazardly into the lane for layups, will be better served driving to the midrange with a pull up or getting into the lane to find the open 3 pt shooter. Our pick and pop has to be deadly, let’s see how well their 7 footers can move on defense on the perimeter. McBride will need to do the same but, get in that lane and draw contact on the freshman.

Not crazy about the match up for ORU, but cool to be on CBS with Kevin Harlan on the call.

Here's hoping we get a "Max Abmas is a flame thrower!!!"  Or two.

Do you think Coach may be tempted to go with a bigger lineup: say Patrick instead of McBride in the starting five?  Then he would still have DJ and McBride off the bench.  Just to match up with Duke's size?  Maybe it is too late in the year to change the lineups. Just a thought.

Syracuse, Louisville, Ohio State and Florida.  Let's add Duke to the list of teams we have defeated in the "Big Dance".  Also, prime time on CBS on a somewhat neutral court against Duke.  This does have opportunity written all over it.  Go Golden Eagles!

If you look at the 5 seeds that ORU could have drawn: St. Mary's, San Diego State, and Miami.  Nothing wrong with those teams but it is much more exciting to face Duke.  What does ORU have to lose? All the pressure is on Duke and their young guys.

Sometimes after teams win a tournament then when they enter the Big Dance there is a let down.  Iowa last year won the Big 10 and then lost right away to a mid major in Richmond.  It does happen after a mountain top experience for these Power 5 teams.

For all the lurkers that are sure to hit this board in the coming weeks, I labeled a few of the team that you'll really want to pay special attention to in your scouting reports:

Pretty sure that’s 7:10 pm EASTERN time which would be 6:10 pm in Tulsa. Wouldn’t want anyone to miss the first half.  😉

Change the starting line-up??

You mean the starting line-up that won 30 games, went undefeated in conference play, and owns TWO of the longest winning streaks in college basketball this year??

THAT starting line-up?  #smh

McBride will be needed big time when Max gets doubled team. He will take more shots and create opportunities for Max.

Connor will provide much needed defense and offense rebounding. Mwamba will be a defense catalyst along with Weaver.

Jurgens and Thompson know what to do.

Another interesting match up is Max vs Duke's point guard J. Roach.  He is their spark plug that makes the Blue Devils go.  Roach was on the Final Four team last year and brings experience to a young starting lineup.  ORU will need to pressure him and get the ball out of his hands as much as possible.  If Max gets the best of this match up then the Eagles have a good shot.
