Coaching Carousel 2010

What's going to sting for TU in the coming seasons is losing to conference coaches that they could have hired for themselves: Josh Pastner at Memphis, Billy Clyde at Houston - if Matt Dougherty ever starts winning at SMU, the TU faithful will really go ballistic.

Well it looks like one coach who won't be jumping on the carousel is Ben Jacobson at Northern Iowa. I was watching an interview with Jacobson and Ali from their quaint looking Hickory, IN style gym thinking "that coach is out of there once this run ends." Maybe not and good for him for getting a comp package that should take nice care of his family for the next 10 years.

It's amazing how facts - and the lack thereof - get so garbled during coaching searches in this age of split-second, cavalier reporting.

On March 17th, a writer from Toledo asked IPFW's Dane Fife if he would be interested if the U. of Toledo called him about their coaching vacancy; Fife said he would listen. No explanation of why Fife was asked the question by the reporter in the first place - seemed kind of random, or maybe even planned. Are the two friends? Here's the article:

Toledo Blade article 3/18/10

It only took a couple of days before ESPN's Andy Katz, either intentionally or carelessly, twisted that little nugget into "IPFW's Dane Fife is expected to be in play at Toledo" What exactly does that even mean? Here's that blog:

Andy Katz blog 3/22/10

Now, it's come around to this, in of all places the Toledo student newspaper: Dane Fife is listed along with former Iowa head coach Todd Lickliter as "a possible candidate" for the Toledo job:

Independent Collegian 3/25/10

All simply because Fife told one reporter, when asked in a phone interview last week, that he might be interested in the Toledo job if they ever asked. Unreal... :P

Great sleuthing, there, OT (as opposed to "stalking", as some call following public figures on the internet ;) )!!

why not get your name on as many of these so called coaching lists as possible...if you come out later and say you're not going anywhere it helps recruiting plus it helps your clout that your being sought after by bigger schools whether you were really a candidate or not

An outside-the-box direction to go — judging by the buzz — would be Oral Roberts coach Scott Sutton, who has been a head coach so long that it's easy to forget he's only 39. Sutton had has a 204-138 record and led ORU to three consecutive Summit League titles and NCAA Tournament appearances (2006-2008). In the past seven seasons, Sutton has four conference titles, two runner-up finishes and a third. He has X and Os knowledge befitting the son of Eddie Sutton, but he isn't exactly a proven commodity mining Houston talent (only two players with Texas ties are on the current roster). In other words, he'd be sort of a Bob Marlin .

This is out of the Houston Chronicle on the Houston University opening.

Dane Fife, Ron Hunter and Greg Campe all being mentioned in the mix for the Toledo job. Hard to imagine Kampe leaving Oakland after all this time and with them at the Summit's peak (ouch - bad cliche).

As the world turns: Tim Floyd walks away from the O.J. Mayo scandal with little more than a hand-slap; to be named head coach at UTEP later today. They seem made for each other - over/under on probation is three years.

Al Skinner gets the axe at Boston College after interviewing at St. John's - quid pro quo?

Oregon is stumbling through the hiring process with their Nike® money, looking like a fat, old drunk searching for love in the red light district - offering their job to any top-tier coach they can think of, and so far getting spurned at every advance.

Hard to determine if TU fans are more furious that Doug Wojcik is ambulance-chasing every BCS job that comes open, or despondent that no other school seems to want him.

Ah, such imagery, OT!! While I haven't been following the Oregon story, it appears from what you said that they're finding it takes more than money to build a program, as we've seen a little closer to home (although money sure helps rev up the engines!!).

Could there be a more awkward coaching situation than the one unfolding at Eleventh and Harvard? A coach that doesn't want to be there, and fans that don't want him - and his last, best hope at exiting conveniently and with self-esteem intact apparently leading him nowhere. With Uzoh, Jordan and Wheatley gone, they are left without any apparent star power, playing a style of basketball that many of their fans find drab and boring. After finishing the season fifth this year, how far will they fall next season? Another season without a Tournament appearance and those fans you talk about may be ready to ride their coach out of town on a rail - and the coach may be ready to take it, or any other means of transportation he can find available that will get him out of Tulsa.

Is it possible that TU and Wojcik will just agree to part ways amicably in a season or two?

The Floyd to UTEP thing is muy ridiculoso. I echo OT's comments in that regard, though I sort of expect more out of UTEP; as much as we like to get into it with their fans, they are one of the programs I really respect in C-USA. But, this deal has me scratching my head. It's more Jerry Tarkanian or Kelvin Sampson than Mike Price.

As for Wojcik, OT named two possibilities about the general reaction of fans and one is right. This one gets complicated. I am pretty ambivalent about the whole deal and I think others are as well. The good thing for TU is that next year a lot of C-USA may be worse, though Memphis will be back and UTEP will still be pretty scary. UAB could be decent. Marshall will stink again and the rest of the league is sort of funny. Southern Miss has some players, in spite of no support from the school.

I would not be surprised to see TU have a pretty good run next season. Expectations will be relatively low and consequently the pressure to win (on the players at least) will not be as high as this year. Maybe some players will emerge after being in the shadow of Uzoh and Jordan.

The recruits and transfers are supposed to be pretty decent. A lot may hinge on Donte Medder's knee, pun intended. Teams hopefully won't be able to run as many junk defenses, but we won't have anyone as good as JJ and Uzoh.

"junk defense" - kind of a dirty word around Wojcik.
