Roster Discussion

The roster will shake out in the next couple of days and the numbers will all work out and yes one more returning player won't be there.

My guess is Vealy...with the only other person that I even see possible as leaving is Sango.

Could it be Yemi? Personally I hope it isn't - he's by far our best defender - But this would be his sixth year with the team due to 2 red-shirt seasons. Maybe he doesn't want to play college ball forever?

I believe there is one other that is questionable, perhaps others as well . . .

I think Sango will be back.  My wife saw him at the mall a week or two ago.  She went over and told him she recognized him from the ORU basketball team, but didn't remember his name.  He identified himself as Kevin Sango, was very friendly and nice with her, and indicated he was excited about the new year.

I understand that this Canada trip will be the litmus test for who the top 8/9 are.  My question is, can a player play on the canada trip and still redshirt?  If so, the trip the coaches can wait, and for that matter, the players (if any are leaving) can wait till they show thier stuff. otherwise, Practice will be the testing ground.

I'm just gonna go ahead and hope that it's Matt S. He probably wouldn't get PT anyway at ORU, and he isn't listed on the roster right now (whereas Ben Haynes is). None of the freshman are listed on the roster yet, but that's to be expected.

I hope it's not Vealy, Liberty, King, or Ehambe most of all.

The Canada games are way before the exhibition season, and all players can play in exhibition games, so I would certainly think that playing in Canada games would not affect a player's eligibility.

In the past, Scott has generally narrowed down to an 8-9 player rotation, and at one point, due to injury, a 7 player rotation.  But the number of players in that rotation was due to the lack of quality beyond that 8th or 9th player.

I wonder if the coaches determine that we have 13-14 quality players, would they red-shirt 2-3 and have a 10-11 player rotation to keep guys fresh.  If so, would they do more full court pressing and play a more pressure defense, since they could sub more freely.

Also, I recall a discussion about the APR Index that the NCAA is enforcing, which will hurt a team that has several players who attend a school as a student athlete on a scholarship, but then don't end up graduating from that school.  In that situation, I believe that transfers count against the APR rating.

If you have a consistently low APR, then eventually you can lose scolarships.  I wonder, with 3 players apparently leaving ORU (Jordan, Spicer, ???) if the APR could become an issue.

I know you won't like this but...

Personally, i hope Yemi isn't coming back. I realy like yemi. He is such a quality guy, but we have plenty of guys who can score as well as play D.  He's been there long enough.  The guy got way too many minutes for his defensive output.  If he stays, great, but if he moves on, then all the more opportunity for a young guy to develop. You know, if given a choice, Sutton will play the seniors out of loyalty. He has to start yemi again, and he will get his 2 pts, 3 rebounds and 1 steal per game again.  Since were rebuilding anyway, let the young guys get in there and take that 3 spot.

I think some of you all will be shocked to see how much Yemi contributes this year. Isbig, you may be eating your words in March.

As many of you know, I have been critical of Yemi's contributions - or lack thereof - for a couple of seasons now.

But now I come to praise the Yem-Dog, not to bury him.

All one has to do is watch the second half of last year's Mid-Con final against Oakland to appreciate what Yemi brings to the table.  His defensive intensity has been unmatched on the roster for at least a couple of years.  He brings a level of experience and athleticism that may prove invaluable, considering the many line-ups we may have to try - and the Top Twenty line-ups we will face - early this year.

What I like now, though, is that we may have an option or two off the bench that can inject some offense if the other team tries leaving him wide open with the ball (as Washington State did in the NCAA game).  Other than a streaky Moses and an unpredictable Marchello, we did not have that element last year in our substitution pattern.

So, I really have no problem with Yemi starting and locking down the other team's leading scorer.  He's a sixth year senior now, and undisputably a leader on the team.

What I'm REALLY looking forward to is whoever comes in for him for a few minutes each half lighting up the scoreboard a little bit. 8-)

Yemi's defensive contributions are more subtle - and not as flashy - as an offensive show of 20 points. But he can be a difference maker when he locks down the opponent's go-to guy. I think it is important that he establish some sort of offensive presence so that his man has to respect his shot. It will open the offense up (including his) a lot. Last year his opponent would sag off of him and cheat on another player. If Yemi can get a player to play him straight up, it would give a better chance to beat him off the dribble or drive to the basket for a dunk.

He has got to contribute at least some this year on offense.  See WSU in the tourney.  Caleb continually got doubled or weakside blocked by Yemi's man.  Also, OT don't forget the first half of the mid-con champ. game as well.  Yemi was on Kangas in the first half as well.  I give it to him and others for stepping up in the second half though.

If you look back at previous defensive "specialists" we've had, each of them had more of an offensive game than Yemi even if it wasn't their bread and butter.  From LO to Luke all the way back to Earl.

We've got to have MORE guys that can score this year especially since we lost nearly 40/game

I hope your right.  But history has shown a timid offensive player.  I would love for yemi to put on a show this year and prove me wrong.

Undisputedly a leader?  He seems like a worker to me.  Moses seems like a leader.

I'm talking about within the team, not just on the floor.  Yemi is well-liked and respected by his teammates.

And remember, he IS royalty.

Regarding Moses; I've said it before, and I'll say it again:  I've never seen a more ambitious player on the floor.  It's obvious he wants to be The Man; time will tell if he can actually be The Man.  That goes for being a leader in the huddle as well as in the stat column.

Rather than look to Yemi for offense, I think what we need to see is 10-15 points a game from the likes of Shawn, Adam, Marcus and Curtis for things to work out this season...

We are going to need leadership and maturity this year as the team tries to digest a lot of new players.

I am so ready for practice to start and for some of the questions that we have to be answered. Like: what does our roster actually look like? what do the new players look like and how good are they? what kind of chemistry does the team have? who will the leaders be on this team? who are the go-to players for scoring?

Im with you.  Right now all these guys are just names.  I want to see some skills, then we can really talk about roster.  Do you think there will be a VIP practice again?

I like the idea of a VIP practice.... especially if it is a controlled scrimmage. I think there was one last year. It was a good way to see the players in a game-like situation. Given all the new faces it would be a nice way for fans to get to know (or at least see) them. Maybe the GEC could charge admission or something.

Last year the open practice was was intended to promote Golden Eagle Club membership.  It was an opportunity for current GEC members to bring prospective GEC members to a special activity where they could meet the players.  As I remember, it was moderately attended, and by few, if any, non-members (except for Manic VP ).  So it really didn't work out as planned.

If they do it again it will probably be set up for a different purpose than what the last one was.
