ORU Bracketology and rankings for 2023

It's amazing any teams outside of the power conferences ever get ranked considering there is an endless supply of mediocre basketball-playing big schools to contend with.

Illinois and Missouri both got votes after going 0-4 combined last week.

I don't know which is more impressive, Illinois' double digit loss to Penn State? Or Missouri getting demolished by 33 at unranked Auburn.

These P5 schools get double-digit chances on their home floors to defeat the other P5 schools in their league (many of them Quad 1 teams), plus can simply buy 6-to-10 home wins vs non-P5 schools in the non-conference season.

Any P5 coach who doesn't win at least 17 games in a season deserves to be fired.

Also, I had a question about the NCAA Top 16...

That is just a ranking of the top 16 teams right now correct? So teams can play themselves into (and out of) these seeds?

Yes the announcement yesterday was preliminary. Think of it as “if the season ended today….”  However, it wouldn’t surprise me if the committee considered that top 16 pretty firm and will just adjust the order between now and Selection Sunday.

For real Eagleman!  While some like to diminish our Sweet 16 run as catching lightning in a bottle, hindsight would say that is precisely what UNC did last year. They were an 8 seed that made it to the championship game but were totally exposed in that second half collapse. Hubert Davis looked lost. But the national media loves the blue bloods, always has, always will.

Interestingly, David Cloninger moved them down from 20 to 23, but they got another vote at 23, one at 24 and six votes at 25. So, now appearing on 9 ballots, up from 4 last week. And for 7 of those 9, it doesn't even appear as an "extreme pick" by varying 5+ spots from the actual rating of 28.

No idea who "Eastom Sports Media" is, but this is wild:  would represent ORU's first chance ever to wear white uniforms in an NCAA tournament game (as higher seed).

This has to assume a 30-4 ORU team entering into the Dance.  Losing just once Thursday or Saturday or missing the tournament final will jeopardize even the 12-seed that we have been seeing recently.

Predictions:

  • Winning the next five games in South Dakota will put ORU between 20-to-25 in the AP poll and as high as a 10- OR even 7-Seed in the NCAA tournament (committee traditionally does not put mid-major conference champions in "8-vs-9" games).
  • Loss in regular season at USD or SDSU will hurt the NET (maybe 20-to-30 points) and will ruin the AP Top 25 voting.  Resulting Summit tournament championship still means a 12- or 13-Seed in NCAA torunament.
  • Loss in first round or semi's in Sioux Falls means an NIT first-round game in the Mabee Center.
  • Loss in finals in Sioux Falls - particularly to SDSU in a close one - means a 16-Seed play-in game in Dayton for the Jacks and anybody's guess for ORU (either a 12-Seed at-large bid or the NIT first-round home game).  This too will be affected by whether ORU went 18-0 or not in regular season conference play.

SDSU was on a similar trajectory last year. Does anyone remember where they ranked and what seed they were in the NCAA Tournament? I guess I wasn't paying close attention then.

ORU will NOT get an NCAA At Large Bid.....just not going to happen if we lose in Sioux Falls due to 0 Quad 1 wins.....but agree if ORU wins out the final 5 games at 30-4 we will probably be in the AP Top 25 and possibly as high as a 10 seed....just not seeing any way that the Good Guys move higher than that due to lack of quality wins.......TheEagleman always EXPECTS A MIRACLE but there are limits.....as Clint Eastwood once said as Dirty Harry in Magnum Force.....A man has to know his limitations.....image.jpeg.bd723d95a09581d5271ef5fd22b3556c.jpeg

I have to agree with Eagleman on this. The only exception i will throw out is we are getting a lot of love and  media attention this season. This is still a long shot but may be our only hope if we don't win out. Let's just win out and not have to deal with the alternative!

Love and Media attention won't get the job done...it's all about Quality Quad 1 victories.....and ORU has 0....of course, North Carolina also has 0 and if they get an At Large Bid then there should be an investigation.....but then again they are UNC and we are ORU.....so be it......Image result for Cosmo Kramer
