Max at Texas

I watched the game. The announcers gave a lot of attention to Max. Tonight, he surpassed 2,900 career points. He's number 15 on the NCAA Division 1 all-time scoring leader list. With at least 13 games left, he has a good chance of ending his career ahead of Mike Daum, who is the Summit League leader and 8th overall with 3,067 points. Daum played in 137 games, Max has already played in 141. To keep things in perspective: Pete Maravich, who is #1 on the list scored 3,667 points in only 83 games - the lowest number of games on the list - and without the 3-point line.

Max is such a sharp young man....clearly an intelligent dude who gets it....at some point in the future this guy needs to be on the ORU payroll in some capacity......we miss him!! :tb-blue:

It's funny, though, watching Max score 22 in what we all might have considered (and justifiably so) merely an average performance while at ORU.

I keep waiting for when he REALLY explodes in a game, to which we'll all say matter-of-factly, "Yeah, well, that's just Max being Max." 🙂

Opponents certainly respect him. You rarely see him open and it’s not unusual for him to be double teamed.  They also tend to pick him up near half court.

I liked the play in the first half after a time out, when Max slipped behind the defense near the out of bounds line. His teammates drew the defense away and passed him the ball for a lay-up.

Max is getting some love in our home town.  In the SportsDay section of yesterday's Dallas Morning News there was a picture of Max at the top of the front page with the headline Jesuit-ex leads UT leading readers to the game story on page 4.  Here's the AP Story

Abmas leads Longhorns to road rout
TEXAS 75, NO. 11 OKLAHOMA 60
NORMAN, Okla. — Max Abmas (Jesuit) continues to be just fine in his transition from the Summit League to the Big 12.
The transfer from Oral Roberts scored 22 points to help the Longhorns roll past No. 11 Oklahoma 75-60 on Tuesday night.
“He draws so much attention, it’s hard to help, to get your help defense going with him,” Oklahoma coach Porter Moser said. “Tremendous player. ... Super-efficient night by an all-league player.”
Dylan Disu had 19 points and 10 rebounds, and Dillon Mitchell added eight points and 13 boards for the Longhorns (14-5, 3-3 Big 12), who shot 50% from the floor to win their sixth straight in the rivalry. Texas was coming off a victory over then-No. 9 Baylor on Saturday.
Abmas went 4 of 8 on 3-pointers and shot 8 for 14 from the field overall.
“Max did a great job being a great floor leader for us in terms of just executing the things that we were trying to get done offensively,” Texas coach Rodney Terry said.
Jalon Moore scored 15 points for the Sooners (15-4, 3-3).

Why teams excel when Max is on the court.

Max is putting up big numbers at Texas: 18 points and 4.4 assists.  Easily all conference numbers in the BIg 12 and yet still no love on the Draft boards.  One that lists the top 150 players with a chance to be drafted and no sign of Mid Court Max.

Even in his ORU days he was often on the Top 150 list, as high as the 50s.

He is a great college player. He is not going to be drafted. I doubt he plays a minute in the NBA. But he’s had great success.

Maybe not in the NBA, but I'm sure he'll play elsewhere, and probably earn a nice income doing so.

Max has a rematch with 4th ranked Houston tonight on ESPN on his home court.  He would like to make up for that 1-13 shooting night last year vs the Cougars!

Max got some reprieve from last year's meeting with Houston by scoring 20 points, 5 reb, and 5 ast in an OT loss, 76-72.  It's interesting to see: 1) how tough the opposing team is guarding Max, and 2) how little help the UT players screen for Max to get free.  Sometimes you would think that you would feed your highest scoring teammate.  🤷‍♂️

Max struggled in the first half but just took what the defense gave him in the second half, which was mostly mid range jumpers.  He made some good passes to his teammates to set them up and showed a lot of maturity running the team.  Midcourt Max had a good look at the half court shot to win it in regulation but the attempt was just a little too strong.

His Kansas City half court shot was a jump shot.  His shot last night was a lunge shot and not in good form.

The Moody Colosseum is just not the same as the friendly confines of the Magnificent Mabee Center.
