Re: USC on the schedule.

That's a mighty long, dry spell between November 15 and January 1.  This season's may be the smallest set of tickets I've ever gotten in the time that I've been a season ticket holder.  Eleven home games so far, with a possibility of two more hinted at.  Maybe an additional non- d-I game or two.

I'm guessing at least 3 home games between 11/15/08 and 1/1/08 - one non D-1 game, and the two games with the mid-majors that we've been guessing at the last couple of days.

Actually, that non D-1 game could come before 11/15.

With every answer comes more questions, but hey, at least we're talking basketball in August!

1) Will the New Mexico trip be reciprocated next year - bringing the Lobos to the Mabee Center for the first time - or is this a "one-and-done" game?

2) I understand that the weekend of 11/14-15 is the "opening weekend" for the NCAA basketball regular season, which would mean that our game at Tulsa on the 15th is the official season opener.  But, could a regular season game against a non-D1 opponent be played during the week before the 15th, as OT hinted?

Great questions, Blue.  I don't know the answer to either.  I would suspect that the game with UNM is a home-and-home, but in this day and time, who knows!  Question that I have is, is this the first time we've played a Steve Alford team?  He's an outspoken Christian (which earned him a lot of grief at Iowa), and I don't know if that had much to do with our scheduling with them, but if so I think it's nice.

Last year's non-conference home games consisted of:

Southwest Oklahoma (non D-1)

Tulsa

Louisiana- Lafayette

Creighton (Bracketbuster game) - played in February

I can't really give you exact details - I don't remember exactly what I heard - like with every coach when you're winning you can do no wrong, and when you're not, you do nothing right.  I remember hearing that some around Iowa were unhappy with Alford because he was an outspoken Christian - thought he should keep his religion to himself.  Had he been winning more, nobody probably would have complained.

Since we were originally scheduled to be a "road" team this season in the Bracketbuster game, I suppose having three non-conference home games (with one of these a non-D1) should not be unexpected this year.  I hope that we can increase the number and quality of home games in the future - but with the need to capture some high $ guarantee games and the increase in tournament opportunities (with three games in three days) - we may not see more than four non-conference home games any time soon.

I think we got a little spoiled last year with the two early December conference home games (SDSU and NDSU), in the same season the TU game was also held at Mabee Center.  This year, those three games - TU and the first two Summit League contests - are all roadies.

It's a shame we can't stagger those games:  the TU game at home in the years we have the December league games on the road, and vice-versa the following season.  As it stands presently, it's feast or famine every other year.

¶  San Juan Shootout (San Juan, Puerto Rico)

That's 26 regular season games right there - assuming we go for 30 total, that leaves the two home games Voice referred to earlier, plus one or two more money games on the road at BCS-type schools, and we're done.

What happened to the Tournament in Puerto Rico?  Is ORU still going?  Should the USC game show being played at the tournament?

Has it ever been discussed to play TU home and home every year?...seems to me it would be great to play early and then again mid-season....i guess, too many league games take up the schedule or is TU just not interested???... :-P

See now this is just brilliant, loses a little touch on the Mayor's cup... but that would be huge for both schools basketball revenue

They did it back in the day, and I wish it would return.  I actually had a conversation with Coach Sutton several weeks ago, and he was in favor of it too.  It would be great to play in late November as well as the last week in January or first week in February.

The only way you would not want to do it is if you really believed you would drop both games for several years.  The benefits of additional media coverage, local fan interest, revenue, and saving on travel costs make this a no brainer in my opinion.

It's one more home game for each school without having to pay a guarantee.  That has to be worth something to both schools.

The San Juan games are listed December 20-22:  look for the ones marked with the "¶"

(and after all the trouble I went to figuring out how to type ¶...)

Does ¶ (Alt + 20) work on here?  Oh, I guess it does.

Yes, i do remember home and home with TU back in the 70's....it was awesome...i was at the very first game with TU back in 1975....i thought we would crush them but it was a heartbreaking defeat...as i recall they beat us by 7 or 8 pts....i drowned my sorrows in Coors for about a week.....it makes so much sense to play twice since we'd get 2 sellouts and no transportation costs...or even better, how about best of 3??... :-D
