That’s the worst basketball team I’ve ever seen in over 50 years of seeing basketball teams.

…at ANY level.

Including grade school. 🫣

The NDSU practice team would provide a better level of competition than this group.

South Dakota State takes it on the chin again, losing by 20 points to Norfolk State in the Sun Bowl Classic in El Paso to fall to 6-7 on the year.

I’ll say it one more time:  there’s something seriously wrong with the Jackrabbits right now.

No doubt the voters for the Summit League Power Rankings will be so shocked with the outcome, they’ll drop ORU another slot in their poll… 😉

The Summit League schools have now played their final games before conference action begins on Dec. 29.  If the non-conference schedule has proven anything, it is that this year's Summit race will be the most wide-open in recent history - there is no clear winner, nor a true bottom-feeder.  In fact, for the first time that I can remember, there is no Summit team in the top 150 (per kenpom) AND no Summit team lower than 300.

And, while SDSU still leads the kenpom rankings (at 163), the haslem rankings list St. Thomas as the best team, while the NET rankings consider Denver as the conference leader.

Furthermore, the top four Summit teams based on the AVERAGE of the rankings for Pomeroy, Haslem and NET are:

St. Thomas 179

ORU 180

Denver 184

SDSU 187

Parity has taken over the league. Interestingly, each of the top four teams will play TWO of the other "contenders" in the first two weeks of the conference season.

St. Thomas - SDSU, at ORU

ORU - at Denver, St. Thomas

Denver - ORU, SDSU

SDSU - at St. Thomas, at Denver

After two consecutive years of the conference champion sweeping through the regular season undefeated, it will be interesting to see if any Summit team will still be unbeaten after the first two weekends this season.

The Summit League winner could be one with 4-6 losses in the League by March and any one of the teams could come out of the postseason tournament as the representative of the Summit League in the NCAA tournament.

As confirmation of the weakness of the Summit League in general this season, Rocco Miller released the Mid-Major (Non-Power) Top 60 teams, and the only Summit team listed was *crickets*.

ORU opponent Missouri State came in at #14, while future foe Weber State was listed at #19 (ORU's next home game will be against the best team to visit Mabee Center this season).  Former Mid-Con/Summit League schools IPFW (#21), Youngstown State (#24), Oakland (#42) all made the list.  The Summit League automatic bid winner is almost certainly looking at a 16 seed, or at best 15.  Pretty embarrassing...

With the bounceback effort in Denver, ORU now sits in the middle of the pack of the standings at 1-1.  However, it is noteworthy that ORU was the ONLY Summit team to play two road games this weekend.  And, the parity factor was very evident, as only UST and SDSU came out of the weekend without a loss (and the Rabbits only had one game on the schedule).  Pull up a seat and some popcorn this season! 🍿

St. Thomas is looking very impressive.  OT talked about how they almost upset top 10 ranked Marquette on the road a few weeks ago.  The Tommies are playing top notch defense by holding their first two opponents to 50 points per contest. If they keep that up then they will be almost possible to beat.

SDSU and NDSU both make a statement Thursday night with one-point wins at St. Thomas and UMKC, respectively.  For NDSU, this helps balance out their inexplicable loss to USD in their home opener.  For SDSU, it places the Jacks as the only remaining undefeated team in the Summit, with a tough battle at Denver coming on Saturday.  The parity in the league is showing - in the 12 Summit games played thus far, the home team is 5-7. 😲

SDSU must've angered the schedule makers this year.  After their win in St. Paul tonight, the Jacks will travel to Denver for a 2 pm CST Saturday start in the Mile High city.  Denver, meanwhile, will be well-rested as the Pios didn't have to travel or play at all this week, having the Thursday night bye.  Ouch...

St. Thomas really looked nervous that last 30 seconds versus SDSU and basically gave the game away.  They had to keep calling timeouts and then missed two free throws that would have put them 3.  Then the Tommies defense was very suspect as they gave Mayo a very open look at a mid-range shot and the game winner.  I think their inexperience in winning big games showed up tonight.

Tommies need to win at ORU tomorrow night but not gonna be easy.....touch match up at Mabee Center between 2 of the top 4/5 teams in the Summit.....hearing its going to be VERY cold in Oklahoma this weekend but fortunately the game is played indoors....😎

Could be worse; could be the ORU ladies at St. Thomas on Saturday.

It's 14º and snowing right now (Friday afternoon) in Saint Paul; Saturday's noon tip-off is expected to be similar.

North Dakota's win at UMKC and Denver's home win against SDSU provides more ammunition of how BAD the loss in Kansas City was - and how GOOD the win in Denver was two days later.

This post aged well in three weeks time.  No more undefeated Summit League teams.

True evidence of conference-wide parity/mediocrity:  for the first time in three years (due to undefeated regular season and conference champions the past two seasons), the Summit League has already completed the "Circle of Sicko", where EVERYONE in the league has beaten somebody, who beat somebody, who beat somebody, etc., etc., ad nauseum:
