A place this season to log the exploits (or lack thereof?) of Max, Connor, Patrick and any other Golden Eagle transfers.

But first, some ridiculous preseason click bait (and the latest example of why former wunderkind Andy Katz is now hanging on by a thread as a college basketball "expert") - his list of the best shooters in college basketball that inexplicably doesn't include Midcourt Max.

Does Katz even realize he's still playing at the college level?

According to the 3 on 3 college basketball website, Max signed a $131,000 NIL deal with Texas.  Good for him, that is most likely more than he would have made overseas this year.  Of course, some of Texas's football guys are making 5 or 10 times more than that.

Anybody know what NIL deal they had for Midcourt Max at ORU?  Maybe a free car.

The site is "On3.com", and it appears to be their estimate of what Max is getting from the Texas NIL "collective" Texas One Fund

Doesn't appear to include side deals he might have made (or will make) with local restaurants, car dealers, etc.

Max named first team preeason All Big XII.

I realize we're early in the "History of Summit League Portal Transfers", but he's the first SL player I can recall earning such recognition in a P5 conference:

Insightful article from college basketball guru Seth Davis, but he leaves out one critical element:  Max didn't just transfer from ORU...

He graduated.

Box score from last night's Orange-White game

Notes:

  • They only played two 8-minute halves.
  • Max played every minute.
  • 2-of-9 and no threes offset by 2 assists, 2 steals and zero turnovers.
  • Looks like he got fouled quite a bit (to be expected in an intrasquad scrimmage).
  • Poor shooting night even included a missed free throw; perhaps fatigue from previous practice(s).

Max named 3rd Team preseason All-American by CBS.

No mid-major players on this 15-man roster, as is typical for CBS since they only televise P6 leagues.  Wonder if Max would have made the team if he was still at li'l ol' ORU?

He probably should have had 3 or 4 assists. Did a very good job of setting up his teammates. Struggled a bit on defense but that is to be expected.

So should anything be made of terrible individual shooting nights in a secret scrimmage, or do we just chalk it up to Colorado being “a great defensive team” like North Texas and Sam Houston?? 😉

Max being tagged as a 3rd team All-American on some sports sites keeps the "target" on his back and he will see a defensive presence on him throughout the game attempting to wear him down.  Hopefully he doesn't attempt to slash into the middle against much bigger trees in the lane.  He needs to get the ball into the other players so that the defense will loosen up and allow him space for shooting.

He is doing a very good of getting teammates open shots but is ice cold so far shooting. They are having to help him some on defense but have a couple big guys out right now.

I think he will adjust to level and get better as season goes along. Hopefully as TX needs his shooting and playmaking.

Head-scratcher:  Patrick Mwamba not even projected as a starter for a Loyola team coming off a 10-21 record last year.  🤔

The money must have been too good to turn down. 🤷‍♂️  He'll be in Europe next year regardless.
