Wow that is early!  Team will have a long stay in the hotel, since they may not even play until Friday or Sat.

Doesn't look like Fairfield is going to pull the upset. Iona up 11 with under 2 minutes left.

Interestingly, NM State is a slight favorite (-1.5) tonight over Grand Canyon, despite the NET rankings and seeding.

Four of the 16-Seeds take the floor as soon as Tuesday and Wednesday in the play-in games.

in the committee’s mind, ORU may still be in that pool of potential participants (though I doubt it).

They pushed the dates back this year. First Four games are Thursday, first round Friday and Saturday. www.ncaa.com/news/basketball-men/article/2021-march-madness-schedule

Well I’ll be hanged. The disruption of the COVID never seems to cease.

Championship games of interest Saturday, where upsets could conceivably produce additional #16 or #15 Seeds on Sunday, helping ORU avoid the dreaded "16-vs-1" first-round match-up.

For reference, ORU is currently #154 in the NCAA NET rankings used by the committee for seeding purposes:

  • MAAC:  No. 7 Fairfield (273 NET) vs. No. 9 Iona (139 NET) - as previously discussed, Iona is more highly-regarded than their seeding; ORU needs Fairfield to win.
  • Big Sky:  No. 2 Eastern Washington (114 NET) vs. No. 5 Montana State (221 NET) - Go Bobcats!
  • Southland:  No. 1 Nicholls State (180 NET) vs. No. 2 Abilene Christian (83 NET) - another weird league seeding; an NSU win is the outcome that might benefit ORU.
  • WAC:  No. 1 Grand Canyon (117 NET) vs. No. 3 New Mexico State (160 NET) - Go Aggies!

And, last but certainly not least Sunday:

  • Patriot:  No. 2 Colgate (8 NET) vs. No 9 Loyola-Maryland (151 NET) - in perhaps the greatest indictment of the NET rankings amid crazy COVID scheduling, Colgate has lost only once in just FOURTEEN games this season, hence the gaudy top-10 ranking nationally.  The Raiders are projected as a 13-Seed in the NCAA bracket; an upset win by the Greyhounds could benefit ORU.

The America East, MEAC and SWAC championships are Saturday as well; but all participants are presently ranked below ORU as solid #16 projections.

Man, a person could have made a lot of money betting against all the teams that could have helped us tonight.

Latest Bracketology updates:

  • CBS Sports (Jerry Palm) - #16 ORU vs. #1 Michigan
  • ESPN (Joe Lunardi) - #15 ORU vs. #2 Alabama
  • Washington Post (Patrick Stevens) - #15 ORU vs. #2 Alabama
  • USA Today (Scott Gleeson) - #16 ORU vs. #1 Illinois
  • Bracket Matrix - ORU still hanging tough as the "weakest" #15 Seed, facing "strongest" #2 Seed, currently Alabama.

Current Consensus:  Rick Pitino’s Iona Gaels may have bumped ORU off the #15 line...I never did like him. Also, Paul Mills said in the Tulsa World article today he’s hearing Ohio State; these coaches’ rumors often bear fruit as they are likely emanating from AD’s "in the room”.

Here's a wild one, from Stadium.com:  ORU vs. Texas in a 14v3 match-up:

Needless to say, playing Texas or Houston would have added significance for Max (Dallas metro), Kevin (Houston), and DJ (Houston).  Always nice to show the schools back home what they missed!

Whoever the Eagles play is going to be really really good!  When you are a 15 or 16 seed you have nothing to lose because very few give you a chance to win.  Just glad the guys get to enjoy the whole NCAA experience.  Thought this run to the dance was a gift this year and that they peaked a year early but hey we will take it.

I'm obviously biased but watching some of these conference tournaments a lot of the automatic qualifiers (including Iona) just don't look as good as ORU.

Lunardi just updated his bracket; ORU is now his strongest 16-seed, facing his weakest 1-seed Michigan:

Any chance they move ORU to the South and slot us against Baylor?

Baylor is still the second-strongest overall seed in most brackets; if that holds true they will face a play-in #16 opponent.

I'd rather ORU was in one of the playoff games than be slotted 63rd or 64th
