Coaching Carousel 2023

Sadly, I think we’re probably another hire or two away from getting a guy that stays a long time, at least if the program continues its upward trajectory. However, if the next coach can build on what Coach Mills has done, then we’ll be in a great spot when we’re looking for the next coach in 4 years or so. Money could be better, fan support could be better, and we might actually start becoming more of a destination and less of a stepping stone. That said, I think ORU is the best mid-major job opening right now, and if they don’t want to hire an in-house guy they’ll have a long list of great candidates.

We’ll always be a stepping stone for motivated coaches. Unless we’re able to move up in the conference hierarchy…

Just the nature of being a low-major program.

I could be wrong, but it doesn’t seem like Wichita State is the type of job Mills would be interested in.

Could be

Why not go after an ex NBA star with Christian roots (Vince Carter, Tracy Mcgrady, etc). This can be a recruiting honey hole with an ex player looking for an opportunity to coach the D1 level.

Interesting idea, but that doesn’t always work because the guys don’t have coaching experience (i.e. Patrick Ewing)

I agree with, Terry. A lot of these guys don't have the x's & o's they need as a head coach. They would be better served as an assistant somewhere first.

Stackhouse kind of showed some promise towards the end of this season and I think Damon Stoudamire did well at Pacific and was a good choice for Georgia Tech (I probably would have gone with Ron Hunter there).

I agree though. Most of the time you win the press conference but not much afterward.

Pass on a big named former player. See Patrick Ewing, Clyde Drexler, Isaiah Thomas, Chris Mullin, et al.

Even Penny? 😄

I should have known someone would pull that one on me! LOL!

Yeah, even Penny to a lesser extent. He's done halfway decent, but for the players he's brought into Memphis, he has definitely under-performed. I take A LOT of grief on the Memphis message board for my critique of Anfernee as a coach.

When you think about it, it's amazing that in 50 years of competition, ORU has yet to see a former player - of ANY ability -  rise to the level of head coach at a Division 1 school.

But then, I can't recall a player from the University of Tulsa doing the same either since I started following them in the 70's.

Am I forgetting someone?

1/2-point:  he played his freshman year at ORU before transferring to Alabama for three seasons.

For all intents and purposes, NOT an "ORU guy".

And I forgot Mike Anderson from TU in the early '80's; he coached at Alabama-Birmingham, Missouri, Arkansas, and most recently fired at St. John's

I like Mike Anderson but money is an issue.

Lets get Springmann!

I was NOT suggesting Mike Anderson as a candidate for ORU; I was augmenting my previous post re: D1 coaches from ORU or Tulsa the past 40 years or so.
