Coaching Carousel 2014

The program had lost some momentum but 76-28 with 2 NCAA appearances and 1 NIT appearance is a pretty good track record.  Maybe he had his success because of the players the previous coach recruited, but even so, that is a solid winning record over 3 seasons.

His problems at Missouri stretched far beyond wins and losses.  His popularity level at Missouri was remarkably low for a guy who been there only three years and had managed to win so many games.

He's a talented recruiter who has always managed to land 4-and-5-star recruits.  But, he has been criticized at both Miami and Missouri for assembling fantasy-league style teams, with lots of talent but gaping holes in the line-ups, poor chemistry, and little player development over their careers.

He is not an X's and O's guy at all, and while a rah-rah type when the mood suits him, he is nonetheless prickly with the fans and media when things aren't going well.

Even his best season at Missouri, where he won 30 games in his first year with a senior-laden team recruited by former coach Mike Anderson, is best remembered for its biggest failure:  a first-round NCAA loss to 15th-seed Norfolk State.

Would not be surprised to see a similar arc at Tulsa:  doing his best work in Years 1 and 2 with the players already assembled, making some flashy signings of higher-profile recruits, then underachieving with his own roster after the current players are gone.

Sounds like all he needs is a couple good assistants to help with Xs and Os. But it may be an uphill battle from the start with the fan base already up in arms.

I think the TU fans who are upset look at it this way:  if he wins, he'll bolt.  If he loses, they're stuck with him and a big buyout.  And either way, he might get them on probation.

This is a head scratcher in many ways. They apparently used a search firm/head hunter and methodically searched for appropriate candiates. From reports in the media, TU is paying Haith +$1.6 million - which is twice what their football coach (Bill Blankenship) makes. Don't think that is normal given that football is the big(?) money maker. Some reported that TU was set on hiring an existing head coach and not an assistant - and someone with previous post-season experience. Other names that were rumored for the job were: Bryce Drew, Bob Hoffman and Marvin Menzies. Each one of those makes more sense than Haith - who brings a questionable past in dealing with the NCAA. He can apparently recruit though - and that goes a long ways toward winning. I guess they want to win  and win badly.

Another issue is the whole timing of this thing. Why announce it on Good Friday when it will get buried with the weekend? Wouldn't it make sense to wait until Monday or Tuesday? I guess once it was out, they had to move forward.

Andy Katz reporting that Haith's deal is for seven years, with automatic 1-year extension in second year, FOR $1.85 MILLION ANNUALLY.

THAT'S FREAKING INSANE! :-o

This looks more and more like TU is obsessed with keeping up with AAC private school running mate SMU, and what they did in hiring Larry Brown.

One big difference, though:  Brown is a gypsy with questionable ethics who CAN ACTUALLY COACH.

That is a very surprising hire! Didn't see that one coming. Good for Haith as he was getting fired next year as Missouri wouldn't be very good and the fans really don't like him. Really didn't think Tulsa would hire someone with his baggage but they are really stepping up in class next year so kinda just pushed all their chips in. Be an interesting year for them

$1.85 million for Frank Haith, are the people who run the Tulsa AD nuts? Crazy money for a mediocre coach that has baggage.

Frank Haith has always been at a school that could buy enough non-conf wins to cover up his poor performance in league play.  it will be interesting to see if Tulsa will have the money to buy him those wins every year.

I bet even Holder at OSU thinks seven years is a little much.

Tulsa World's Bill Haisten saying Katz was wrong:  Haith contract is actually six years, $1.3 million annually.

Still....!!!

This has been the year of "Get out and take a lesser job BEFORE your public shaming/firing".

Haith, Cuonzo Martin, Buzz Williams...

Couple of surprising names thrown out there for the Missouri job in this column from Saturday:  ORU's Scott Sutton, and Kim Anderson of D-II Central Missouri (who was a candidate for the ORU job back in 1999 when Scott ended up with the gig).

And, eight minutes after I posted that:

Lots of Tiger fans wanted Kim Anderson (former player and assistant coach under Norm Stewart) to be their coach. At 58 years old, he breaks the mold of hiring a young, dynamic coach. He certainly brings experience and familiarity to the job.

Maybe Mizzou will start playing us again.....that game where we beat them at the Mabee Center a few years ago 60-59 on the buzzer basket by Craion was one of the most exciting finishes of the past decade in an ORU contest..... :nerd:
