ORU Basketball Watch Party Scheduled for Sunday

Plus you can walk straight out of the practice gym and into the Mabee Center for Victory, if you need your 6 o'clock church that badly.

Interesting how everyone griped that the Diamond Dinner was on a Sunday night but have no problem with a Sunday night watch party.

Another difference is this event was scheduled when CBS will be making the announcements. We had no control over that as we did the Diamond Dinner.

This watch party thread brings up some memories, as I was fortunate enough to attend the last "NCAA Watch Party" in 1984. It consisted of about ten of us in the Mabee Center athletic office, waiting for the phone call to come from the NCAA. Coach Acres received the call - and immediately told the group of ten that the Titans were "going to Memphis". We all cheered - since it meant a relatively short road trip... and then he told us - and we're playing Memphis! (groans replaced the cheers). This was before the era when tourney teams were prohibited from playing a game in their arena when they hosted a regional. The NCAA had thrown us a curve, giving us a road game in the first round. So, don't expect any favors from the NCAA on Sunday - And, if we have a watch party that packs out the practice gym, we've come a long way in 22 years!

Another piece of trivia... the ORU-Memphis game was not broadcast locally in Tulsa. In those days, the CBS affiliates could only "block" a certain number of games for their city (to protect as the primary game feed). Since TU and OU had also both gained berths in the tournament, the Tulsa affiliate chose to not "waste" their allotment on ORU, in case both TU and OU would make runs in the tourney. As it worked out, TU lost early, and no such action was necessary. So, if you think we get no respect in the Tulsa media today - nothing has changed! Ironically, the OKC affiliate did air the ORU-Memphis game!

Speaking of your son.... he took some great game pictures. Is there anyway you could send me (or Doc) copies? Wish you guys could have stayed for the championship game. It was so satisfying.
