BracketBusters Announcements Set for Monday, Tuesday

(01/29/2006) FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - The four Big Sky Conference men?s basketball teams participating in the BracketBusters pool - Montana, Montana State, Northern Arizona and Eastern Washington - will find out their opponents early next week.

The University of Montana, with a 15-3 record, is in the hunt for one of the 13 games that will be shown by the family of ESPN networks. The pairings for the 13 television games will be announced Monday, Jan. 30. Game times and the TV schedule won?t be announced until Tuesday, Feb. 7.

The non-television matchups will be announced on Tuesday, Jan. 31. Northern Arizona, Eastern Washington and Montana State appear headed for non-TV games. The non-TV mathups will be considered games that resulted as being part of the BracketBusters pool. The TV games will be designated as ?BracketBusters presented by eBay? games.

Forty eight of the 50 games will be played on Saturday, Feb. 18. Two of the television games will be played on Friday, Feb. 17.

A BracketBusters record 100 teams began this season in the pool. Fifty teams were designated as home teams, while the other 50 were designated as visiting prior to the season. ESPN will pick the teams which will compete in the TV games based on criteria such as RPI, record against Division I teams, non-conference record, conference record, road record, standing in polls, and non-conference strength of schedule.

Montana State will also host a game. Eastern Washington and Northern Arizona will be on the road.

As part of the BracketBusters agreement, the two teams paired this year will meet again next season in a regular non-conference game. Last season, Northern Arizona traveled to Tulsa as a game that resulted because of the BracketBusters pool. This season, Tulsa traveled to Northern Arizona in a non-conference game. Montana and Montana State will play on the road next season against their respective opponents, while Eastern Washington and Northern Arizona will be at home.

A BracketBusters Web site is expected to go live on Wednesday, Feb. 1. The address will be www.espnbracketbusters.com.

This year?s BracketBusters is sponsored by eBay and the U.S. Navy.

...ORU must travel to 16-3 Montana, while Valpo gets to host 6-12 Niagra. What's wrong with this picture?!?

Yeah, but when we smoke Montana and Valpo gets their shorts handed to them by Niagra, it'll be sweet!!!

From what I see, ORU will be the first team Montana has played this year that has a winning record. That make me smell "upset". Our team plays at home Thursday night (Febr 16) and then flies out to play Montana on Saturday (Febr 18).

ELMHURST, ILL. ? Oral Roberts (12-9, 7-2 Mid-Con) and Valparaiso (11-8, 4-5) have been assigned non-conference games as a result of their participation in the larger BracketBusters presented by eBay pool. The Golden Eagles will travel to Montana, while the Crusaders will host Niagara on Saturday, February 18. Game times for both games are to be determined.

There were 100 Division I institutions in the original pool and 26 teams were selected to participate in the BracketBusters presented by eBay on Friday, February 17 and Saturday, February 18. The remaining 74 squads have been assigned non-conference games.

The BracketBusters presented by eBay is a concept developed by ESPN in conjunction with a group of conference commissioners prior to the 2002-03 basketball season. The 2006 event will be the fourth for ESPN. ESPN?s commitment to the series continues to increase with the network adding another national cablecast with six games on ESPN or ESPN2, in addition to seven more produced for ESPNU.

?We are very pleased that two of our teams are gaining exposure as part of the pool of 100,? Mid-Continent Conference commissioner Tom Douple said. ?This is a great opportunity for Oral Roberts and Valparaiso to get a home-and-home series against competitive opponents.?

The Golden Eagles will face Montana, which owns a 14-3 overall record and a 6-1 mark in Big Sky action. ORU is 3-0 all-time against the Grizzlies, including an 80-68 win during the 1997-98 campaign. Oral Roberts is 15-2 all-time against Big Sky teams with its only losses coming to Weber State in 1976 and 1991. As part of the BracketBusters presented by eBay agreement, Montana will visit the Mabee Center during the 2006-07 campaign.

?We have a lot of respect for Montana?s program. They?re obviously having a great year,? Oral Roberts head coach Scott Sutton said. ?This will be a difficult challenge but we?re looking forward to it.?

The Crusaders take on Niagara for the first time since the 1993-94 campaign. The Purple Eagles are 6-12 overall and 3-7 in MAAC play. Niagara leads the all-time series, 2-1. Valpo will make a return trip to Niagara next season as part of the BracketBusters presented by eBay agreement.

?We?re looking forward to playing Niagara and I?m excited to visit with and compete against an old friend of mine (Niagara head coach Joe Mihalich),? Valpo head coach Homer Drew said. ?They?re an aggressive, exciting team, and I think it will be a very competitive game.?

01/21/06 at CS Sacramento (13-8 ) W 73-71

I cannot for the life of me figure out how these guys did not get a TV game. Makes me wonder if ESPN planned on this match-up all along, but our poor overall record dragged the game off the TV slate..

EB, thanks for looking at their record through clear eyes. Obviously I hadn't had my 2 cups of coffee yet.

I still feel optimistic.

I never knew there were enough people to even have a college in the state of Montana...good thing we got matched up with a highly visible team in a highly visible conference. Can't wait for the return game next year.

Dazed, confused, and mainly just apathetic. See below for my only sincere thoughts.

Maybe Montana won't know right away to 2x and 3x Caleb and he will get to show some poor defender how we paly hoops down here.

From my viewpoint in the Northwest, this is not a good situation for ORU. Missoula has historically been a difficult place to get to, and a difficult place to win. And, although the Grizzlies have a significant opportunity to win the Big Sky's bid to the NCAA, they certainly are not a household name to the general public - so a win would be "ho-hum", and a loss would be perceived as a bad loss. The kicker is the additional wear-and-tear travel (with potential snow delays) on our team in the peak of the conference season. I can't think of a worse matchup (of the Bracket Buster home teams) from a travel perspective, except Hawaii. I'd hate to go through all that and end up with a loss. Poor Conley Phipps, Sr.... the true road warrior.

All that aside, it is what it is - and I'm sure the team will put their best foot forward.. but I was sure hoping for a regional matchup (or for personal reasons, Boise State).

Does anyone know if Big Sky officials will be used? If so, Caleb could have three fouls before the opening tip-off!

Eli, man, you gotta get out of this funk (I saw your remarks in the chat room last night). There is STILL a LOT of basketball to be played this season. You're going to miss out on it if you don't make an attitude adjustment.

Last night was a GOOD win! We put together two really good halves. We had multiple contributors. Larry is playing like we always hoped he would. Chris is shooting lights out. Yemi and Moses are starting to come around after a slow start. Mickey had a double double last night. I really think we're starting to see some of the positive things taking place in this team that we'd hoped we would earlier in the season. To me, we're finally starting to see some life in this team, and your on the verge of bailing. Don't do it. DON'T DO IT!

The WIU loss was tough. But how about this: WVU(#9) loses to Marshall(#282) - 58-52 last Wednesday night. Now THAT'S an upset. The point is, EVERY TEAM, even West Virginia, even DUKE, has off nights. We had one, it's behind us, now we move one and hopefully let that loss serve as motivation for future games. It no doubt had some bearing on the game last night.

One other thing - every team has off nights - and that includes IUPUI. I'll go out on a limb and predict that IUPUI is going to lose to someone that they shouldn't have before the end of the season. When that happens, we're back on top.

So cheer up, buddy! This season is a long way from over, and by the time the dust settles, I absolutely believe that this will be a season that we can be proud of. Has it all gone the way we hoped? Maybe not, but who cares, as long as we get where we're wanting to go!

OldTitan, are you going to put together a bus trip to Missoula? :)

Yeah, I would LOVE to see how you would pull that one off - I just did a MapQuest of the trip, and it's 1600 miles! That's 22 hours if you drive straight through, not allowing for snow plow escorts! You're gonna need something a little more substantial than tepid Cokes, stale Corn Nuts, and re-runs of the ORU-TU video!!

TMH....you're right. I SHOULd get an attitude adjustment. I guess I just saw us as a 12 or 13 seed in the tourney this year with a good chance to upset some teams, two losses max in the Mid-Con, and multiple mentions of ORU/Caleb on the national scene and so forth. All is not lost, this is for sure. I'm also a little bummed that for the second season straight I won't make the mid-con tourney. One of my best friends is having an unexpected wedding in Tulsa in March which I'm thrilled to be apart of but unfortunately I couldn't afford to go to that AND the tourney. Perhaps next year when my boy Hazell (yeah he hasn't played a nanosecond of ORU bball and I'm already calling him my boy, I know) and Green and Tutt and the gang post that 15-1 Mid-Con record, I'll be able to fly down and watch them romp on everybody.

Until then, I'm just gonna have to buck up. We do have a shot at the #1 seed in this year's tourney. That's for sure...and the way we played last night, I think our chances of grabbing it are getting better. Hopefully when Tutt gets back, there won't be any type of weird transition period before the chemistry gets fully back in tact.

I think we all have those same feelings. My lowest point came at the shellacking we took from Missouri State. We were out-manned, out-hustled, out-coached. Our guys looked lost, and late in the game didn't even make and effort to get back on defense. My dream of the perfect season was gone. But as I had time to think about it after that, I realized that a lot of the things that I had thought were wrong.

It wasn't that the team wasn't living up to my expectations, it was that my expectations for the team were unrealistic. As much as I wanted that group of guys to be superhuman, they weren't. They're a bunch of guys that are working hard, often in adverse circumstances, traveling long distances, keeping late hours, and trying to make it in school.

I think it helped me watching my son, who plays basketball for a local high school. He and his teammates give their heart and soul to play for the team. They practice long hours, give up their vacation time, are always tired, and pretty much always hungry! It's helped me put what the ORU players go through in perspective, and to give them a little more slack than I would have before this year.

I just didn't want you to miss out on what I think will be an exciting end to the season. Tell me this - would you rather win some big games early, earn a higher RPI, then fall apart late in the season, or take our lumps early and pull it together for a strong finish? I know, you'd rather win some big games early, then pull it together for a strong finish, but at this point that isn't an option! Of the other two, I'd rather see a strong finish, and I strongly feel that that's where we're headed. I see the different pieces of the basketball puzzle starting to fall into place, and I think that we're starting to see the team that we thought we'd be seeing in December.
