Mike Minyard
TU, ORU combating economic downturn By JOHN KLEIN Senior Sports Columnist Published: 1/30/2009 2:19 AM Last Modified: 1/30/2009 3:07 AM TULSA RAN a special two-for-one ticket deal for Wednesday night's Conference USA showdown against Alabama-Birmingham. Oral Roberts started a special $5 for any general admission seat in the Mabee Center. Even the NFL, America's most popular sport, discounted about 1,000 tickets to $500 for Sunday's Super Bowl. Dropping the price of some Super Bowl tickets may be no more than a symbolic effort (those tickets would have been sold at just about any price). Still, it is a sign of the times that sports is not immune to the current economic downturn. ORUIsbig
My question is what impact does the BOK Center have on the Mabee center revenue? I noticed they had Kool and the Gang and then they canceled. Guess they don't have as much to celebrate about.
ORU Big Brother
My question is what impact does the BOK Center have on the Mabee center revenue? I noticed they had Kool and the Gang and then they canceled. Guess they don't have as much to celebrate about. No one's buying tickets to Mabee Center events. They do a poor job of promoting and advertising. Kool isn't the first act to cancel in the last few months.
Mike Minyard
I wouldn't pin it directly on advertising and promotions. The Mabee Center has some image issues when it comes to concerts. Some shows just aren't going to sell well. Kool probably wouldn't have survived at any venue in Tulsa.... Cain's or Spirit Bank. I've seen more advertising in the last month for Mabee events than I have in the previous 25 years I've been alive. Getting concerts like Reba and Kelly, One Republic, Little Big Town, Chicago, etc. will help get things going in a positive direction. The Mabee Center just hasn't been very "hip" for a long time. Not selling alcohol also limits the types of shows you can have here. The BOk Center isn't really hurting the Mabee Center. ORU wasn't getting a lot of those events. The SpiritBank Center is what has hurt the Mabee Center this year. A lot of the Christian acts have actually moved over to that building. There is room though for a Mabee Center, and I think they have things going the right direction now. I don't think all things are bad, and I certainly don't think all things are great here. It's somewhere in between those two sides.
bballmangc
I wish they would get the Tournament of Champions back as well as some of the State Basketball Playoffs (i think that is on a rotating basis between Tulsa and OKC)
Mike Minyard
I think the Tournament of Champions deal was lost because of a sponsorship with Creek Nation Casinos. I'm not positive, but I think that had something to do with it. I've heard some rumors that it could be looking for a new home though. That was a while ago, and not from a great source. Old Titan
It cracks me up that "The Pink Floyd Experience", a tribute band from Norway complete with lasers, flash pots, huge inflated pigs and the like, will be playing at the Mabee Center in March. I guess desperate times call for desperate bookings. I can promise you there'll be some people in the Mabee Center that night who have never stepped on campus before, and the "No Smoking" rule will be sorely tested - for a number of combustible substances. Mike Minyard
Can't be any worse than when we had Willie Nelson a couple years ago... I don't see a pot smoking yellow face that I can post. oh well

I think it is WONDERFUL! Having "those people" on campus is a VERY GOOD thing! Some wise guy once said that sick folks need a doctor, not healthy ones. Bring 'em ALL in, I say. When I came to ORU, I was not a Christian. Most ORU students took a VERY negative approach toward me. It turned me off BIG TIME to ANYTHING Christ related. It is EXTREMELY unfortunate that MOST Christians turn their nose at non-believers, instead of taking approach that guy 2,000 years ago took. That's the way I see it. We all have differing views. I understand your thinking Isbig. I just think that you welcome them in and build relationships with them, in hopes of having a chance to be a positive witness. They may be "partiers" and "pot smokers", but thier sins aren't any bigger than mine...
ORUIsbig
Easy Voice...most of my comments were just me talking smack... Bring them in and love them...yes Bring them in and entertain them...Why? I am not saying don't have non-christians on campus, I just happen to agree with what i thought was a Mabee policy of not having AC/DC or Marilyn Manson as acts. If that's judgmental, fine. We don't invite Jay-Z to do a concert for our youth in order to "reach" the community either. When i was one of "those people", the problem wasn't that Christians didn't love me, but that they didn't love me enough to tell me the truth. Kinda goes along with churches that have changed their worship style to basically a rock concert, with some lyrics about God. At what point are we 'inviting' to the world and at what point are we 'becoming' the world...

donkeylarry
I saw Richard Marx at the Mabee Center in 1987. His feathered mullet was beautiful and his voice was just as lovely. A few years earlier, I got to see John Denver, bring the house down with his fiddle. Once you have had these two icons, what more does the Mabee Center have to prove? theeagleman5
TheEagleman saw Elvis at Mabee back in the mid-70's while working on the clean up crew but was never much of a fan....enjoyed much more seeing Three Dog Night, Doobie Bros. and Alice Cooper over at the old Tulsa Civic Center....is that building still there or have they torn it down?....
