Schedule 24-25

A School of Dentistry class held their 40th reunion at ORU last year in April. There have been other reunions like this, such as Living Sound--a music group of the 1960s (October event), the Titans of 1969-75 (an October event), and ORU Baseball of 1978 (in May 2018). Groups that want to hold their reunions at a time other than during Homecoming can contact the Alumni Relations office to work out the details. What matters is getting together, not the date on which it happens. 🙂

Hall Of Fame weekend has now become a bit of a de facto homecoming event in early February, particularly depending on who is being inducted, and specifically if they're a baseball alumnus and there are either home games that weekend or the Diamond Dinner is on Friday night.

Frankly, 40 years after graduating, I've never attended a homecoming event in February OR November (aside from eating free cake served on the floor following the game), so I don't really have a dog in the hunt either way.

It's ALWAYS nice, however, to have folks drop by my seats in the Mabee Center to say "Hi" ANY TIME they are in town.  Ya'll come...

Now that’s a trip I might HAVE to make, just over 2 hours away…

An early season MTE would be nice.

SDSU is playing in the Cayman Islands Classic against a bunch of mid major teams.

Those cost $$$ to participate.  They are good for the fanbase to travel and have a little "fun in the sun", but for those mid-majors that use their non-conference games to build their budget, it is almost impossible to justify going to these tournaments.

Conversely, it is a great way for a mid-major to get quality D-1 wins on a neutral court.  ORU has the been the recipient of these wins at some neutral sites in the past.  College athletics is totally different than those days.

The Ole Miss game is a new team on the schedule.  I think ORU played them in a tournament, maybe in Florida, about 8-10 years ago. The Eagles had the game won but slipped up in the last minute or so and the Rebels came back and won a close one.  It may have been in Sutton's last year in Tulsa.

It was Paradise Jam in St. Thomas, USVI [Edit: Nov 18, 2016 - the tourney was the weekend before Thanksgiving]. I was there with family. ORU's point guard Aaron Anderson went out with an injury in the second half, and when they needed to inbound with 35 seconds left and a 3-point lead, they threw it away and Ole Miss hit a 3 to tie. ORU still had a shot to win at the buzzer, but it missed and OT went badly.

We ran into Scott, who knew my dad, at the grocery store that night. He was very gracious but as down as I've ever seen a coach. That game definitely accelerated his exit.

Game story with links to box and play-by-play:

https://oruathletics.com/news/2016/11/18/11_18_2016_3351.aspx

Turning Point
Up five with less than a minute to go in regulation, ORU had a look at the basket but a floater fell short and Ole Miss scored the final five points of the period and the first five of overtime.

Now, THIS is the kind of contract that still exists, ALL EXCUSES ASIDE:  North Dakota will HOST potential pre-season No. 1 Alabama in Grand Forks on December 21st, as Devil's Lake, ND-native Grant Nelson returns to the Great White North.

In return, the Crimson Tide gets games with UND in Tuscaloosa the following two seasons.  No financial details have been released, but it wouldn't surprise me if no money is changing hands for these three games.

This is the kind of scheduling that happens as the result of personal interaction between schools/staffs, apart from having guarantee money, protecting your NET ranking, all the so-called "unwritten scheduling rules", etc.

It would appear there is STILL room in this college basketball world for relationships and negotiations in scheduling.  It's frankly refreshing to see!  #AskForTheSale #NoExcuses

Then no reason why Coach Cal should fear coming to Mabee Center next season for homecoming in return for ORU visiting  Fayetteville twice....and aren't Rick Barnes and HCRS friends from their UT days? Let's make that call and see if the Volunteers will give us a 2 for 1....yeah I know....dream on....🤩

Who knows wherever-that-whoever might have connections; every situation is different based on relationships past and present, plus having the initiative and creativity to think outside the box when it comes to potential match-ups.

The UND-Bama series proves that games can still be scheduled the old-fashioned way, through relationships, imagination, and negotiation.

It's not ALWAYS solely about whether you have the money to "buy" games (or not).
