Vegas line opens with ORU as a whopping -8.5 favorite; wondering if ORU has ever been favored by that much over the Jacks in this century?

That’s a lot of points…

just a crazy number....i like the Jacks to win outright

Need another big game from Vanover.

I always dread the beginning of conference season because the quality of officiating tends to go downhill dramatically.

The refs were pretty bad Friday night as well with Missouri State; I looked the three guys up and one was predominantly a Missouri Valley guy; the other two had only worked about 6 games each this season and were ranked in the 250+ range by KenPom (that’s not good).

With games tonight and Wednesday we might see better than usual refs; it’s Saturdays that are always sketchy with so many other better-paying gigs across the land.

From the statistics up to this point in the season, this is not the SDSU team from last year. The Jackrabbits were an offensive juggernaut last season (#2 in the country in FG% and #1 in 3—pt%). They miss Scheierman (transferred to Creighton) and Wilson (graduated), but they are still very talented. They have had some rest and I look for them to ‘breakout’ – similar to what we saw Missouri State do Friday evening.

Mayo (1.3 ppg, 6.5 rebs and 2.6 assists) is a special talent along with Dentlinger (8.8 ppg and 4.4 rebs) and Arians (7.9 ppg and 4.9 rebs). They also have Kyle (6’9 Fr) who is contributing 9.8 ppg and 4.0 rebs and Easley (6’2 Jr) scoring 9.3 ppg with 2.6 rebs. They are a well rounded team – shooting 49.5% (FG%) and 34.1% from 3-pt on 21.8 attempts per game. SDSU score 68.7 ppg and commit 15.4 turnover per game. Like past years, it does not appear they play strong on the defensive side of the court.

It just seems like whenever it gets to conference season officials allow hand checking, call a bunch of phantom travels on head and ball fakes, and we see a rise in questionable charges calls.

Basically anything that prohibits athleticism and freedom of movement so teams with athletes are penalized and slower teams can just grab and hold.

Here is a comparison of the teams/players using BPM and PER calculations. The stats capture 12 games (or so) and are mildly interesting. Given the different schedules, it is debatable how insightful these measurements are. I think a look at these metrics during conference play will be interesting. Vanover’s numbers are off the chart…

at 12.19.2022

ORU                       BPM      PER                        SDSU                     BPM      PER

Vanover                10.2        28.9                        Easley                      3.3       15.0

Abmas                    5.5        22.4                        Dentlinger               0.6       13.0

Thompson              3.4        16.2                        Mayo                       -0.3      14.6

Weaver                   3.2        20.7                         Kyle                        -0.4      13.8

Mwamba                 3.1        18.9                         Te Slaa                   -0.5      10.8

McBride                   2.3        17.1                         Mims                       -0.8        7.8

Jurgens                   0.5        18.0                        Arians                     -1.2        9.6

Phipps                    -5.0        12.9                       Mors                        -3.1        9.6

                                                                            Lien                          -4.2      12.9

                                                                            Appel                       -6.2        9.2  (only 5 games)

Player Efficiency Ratio (PER) is derived by a formula: (PTS + REB + AST + STL + BLK − Missed FG − Missed FT – TO-PF) / GP. The rating for each player is then adjusted to a per-minute basis so that, for example, substitutes can be compared with starters in playing time debates. It is also adjusted for the team's pace. In the end, one number sums up the players' statistical accomplishments for that season.

Box Plus/Minus (BPM) is a basketball box score-based metric that estimates a basketball player’s contribution to the team when that player is on the court. It is based only on the information in the traditional basketball box score

BPM uses a player’s box score information, position, and the team’s overall performance to estimate the player’s contribution in points above league average per 100 possessions played. BPM does not take into account playing time

Great stuff, Terry.  While the value of these metrics at this point in the season can certainly be debated, it is INCREDIBLE that the seven primary players in ORU's rotation ALL have a PER higher than ANYONE on the SDSU roster. We'll see whether this holds true on the court tonight.

With every ORU game this year, I've always felt better when Connor is on the court - and a little nervous when he leaves.  Now I know why...

Free tickets tonight for First Responders??.....well, Old Titan and Bogus may need some quick medical attention if ORU blows another 20+ point lead like they did on Friday vs. Missouri State....hopefully the game is less stressful at Mabee tonight......GO BLUE!!! :tb-white:

I've noticed this much:  teams in general - and perimeter players in particular - do not try the same passes through the lane when he's in the game, affecting their offensive flow.

Sure, post men with the ball are not really hesitating to go at him on the block, and some perimeter players have driven around him on occassion, and with some success.

But when they try to run their offenses, the simply don't pass the ball across the lane or to the offside block with him in the game.

ORU should win tonight: they are at home, improving game by game, and SDSU still has some unanswered questions (injuries, star power, and struggling on the road).  Right now, the Eagles are the best team in the Summit but of course that can change as the season goes on.  ORU holds off the Jackrabbits in the end, 85-80.   Personally this would be the biggest win of the season for the Eagles, since SDSU is coming off a 21-0 conference record.  Hope the guys come out with some fire in the belly tonight!

The worst ORU has played since November, and they’ve still managed to double the score 32-16 with 3:00 to go first half.

SDSU not a very good team right now…

Please do not let them back in it in the 2nd half. ORU should beat this time by 20+ and set the tone for conference play!
