This is all good stuff, but did I miss anyone mentioning that, (at least when they are in the game) Lacis, Weaver and particularly Herron can pick and then "rim run" down one side of the lane with Max driving down the other for the shot or lob, ala Trae Young and Chris Paul?

Obanor did not have the explosive hops that Herron has; can't wait to see if Max throws a lob off the backboard for a jam from Sir Issac!

It would really be a big bonus if Herron can step in and play some minutes this year for sure.

Also, if Weaver can stay healthy all year!:)

Available candidates:

Lacis:  (does not have consistent 3-point shot - at least last year. He shot 37% and 38% during his Fr and So seasons)  https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/francis-lacis-1.html

Plet or Clover: not sure if they can make the jump shot from the “pop”.

Herron: as OT mentions above, he certainly has the athleticism to “roll” towards the basket. From limited video, he has a decent jump shot that maybe can be developed

Did you ever think we'd have Andy Katz "schedule-recruiting" for ORU??? Love it!!!

How about the postponed TU game that was never played last year.  Just play TU twice this year, once at each home arena.

We need Weaver to be consistent on his shot and tough with the ball as well.

TU wouldn't have the stones to play the opener at Mabee Center let alone play ORU twice...🤨

Can Max lead the nation in scoring again? Or will he be more of a playmaker this year?  Will his defense improve?  Any thoughts

May be a bit harder for him to lead the nation in scoring as we have more and better shooters to help him.

Yes, plus he’s going to draw fanatical attention on defense as well.

That’s where McBride can provide a wrinkle that ball-dominant RJ Glaspar did not provide last season:  a facilitator at the point that might allow Max to run around and get open at the 2 or 3 (ala Kareem).

And, one other thing is for dang sure:  ORU’s not going to see much zone next season!

It'll be interesting to see who ends up running the point most this season. Max turned out to be a natural at the PG position, but as good as he was running the pick and roll, I think he's almost more effective getting open off the ball. It could be a very confusing defensive assignment for an opponent's guards if those two guys (McBride and Abmas) re splitting PG duties equally along with Jurgens. Our guard play this year could be very fun to watch.

Excited to see how Clover/Plet improved on offense. Not sure if we can expect Lufile to play given his physical condition. Herron is an intriguing player, but will take some time to get used to D-1 basketball. These are (apparently) our post options if/when Obanor leaves.

For Max to lead the nation in scoring next year someone has to develop into a true #2 scorer. KO was 25% of the offense last year (approximately, I took statistics in summer school) and the leading scorer in the 2 NCAA tournament wins. We are bringing back 52.3 points a game and Max is going to see double teams, switches and traps constantly against man defense and they may not see much tradition 2-3 zone, but they will see a lot of match up zone and box & 1 on Max, plus half court traps, 1-3-1 zones. Someone has to develop into that # 2 guy and we need a big to be able to hit a 3  up top (doesn't have to be as good a scorer as KO, but hit a few to keep the D honest) or that pick up top is only a trap on Max because the big doesn't have to worry about getting back to the screener if he isn't a scoring threat.

I see both Carlos and Kareem upping their numbers and both should be close to double figures, who will be the scorer that teams cant leave to double Max, that can score in bunches for brief stretches' when needed.  Max is going to have the ball you don't want him expending his energy fighting to get open to get the ball. Can Weaver develop a good enough shot to be the guy that sets that high screen? Can Carlos or Kareem up their production to 15-17 a game? Kevin and Max benefited each other, they got the other guy open shots. Who steps up to be fill that void?

Starting line up? Max, Carlos, Kareem, Weaver and Lacis? You cant start McBride with Max, Carlos and Kareem that is too small, we got beat on the boards with KO, and he averaged 9.6 rpg. Herron has good size and athleticism, should give us some good minutes but he's a freshman and all that entails?

I personally think Kareem may be the break out guy, he handles the ball well, drives to the basket very well and if he improves his 3 ball a little he could be the #2 scorer, Carlos also had shown so much improvement and carried us for a while against Arkansas but I don't know if can score consistently enough like Kareem has the potential to. Kareem and Weaver will probably be the keys to our season!!! If Weaver can hit an occasional 3 up top off the pick and pop to keep that double team off Max and Kareem becomes a big time scoring treat on the wing, Max will still score a ton of points and ORU will win a lot of games!!!

UPDATED 7/8/21:  here's who it's thought will be in uniform for 2021-22 and their scoring ave. from last year:

  1.  Max Abmas- 24.5
  2.  Carlos Jurgens- 6.0
  3.  Francis Lacis- 4.1
  4.  Kareem Thompson- 8.7
  5.  Deshang Weaver- 6.0
  6.  Nate Clover- 1.6
  7.  Elijah Lufile-
  8.  Jamie Bergens-1.4
  9.  Trey Phipps (transfer from Oklahoma)
  10.  Sir Issac Herron (prep signee)
  11.  Issac McBride (transfer from Vanderbilt)
  12.  Elijah Lawrence (prep signee via Rice)

There are five guys in the rotation who could realistically average 10-to-14 points a game:

  • Thompson
  • Lacis
  • Jurgens
  • Weaver
  • McBride

Which is more than needed for ORU to average 75-to-80 points per game, with Max scoring 20+ per contest, and with nothing at all figured into the equation from the bigs Lufile/Clover/Herron/et al.

Looking forward to TrueBlue82’s annual preseason number-crunching exercise of scoring projections!
