Paul Mills Named Head Basketball Coach

Old Titan

Also according to Mills on the new coaches

  • Hester - deep recruiting roots in Houston and DFW
  • Patterson - worked closely w/Drew on the Baylor offense.  He will focus on offense and Mills focus will be on teaching defense

It was the first thing Hoover brought up.  Mills said something like "they warned me you had an issue with that."  (I'm guessing Blake Freeland saw Hoover's twitter timeline and warned him)

He then went on and explained that during shoot around before practice the players at Baylor get to pick the music and Drew made them play the radio versions not the explicit versions and that was the version he knew.

After another 10 minutes of Kim Mulkey and Art Briles; Hoover ended the interview with "sorry we did not get to talk about ORU more."

That's very disappointing. I've always had a fondness for John Hoover, on a personal level. And, thought he was a good journalist.

Perhaps his bias toward ORU (with his TU roots) got in the way of objectivity?

Mills also said that the news of his hire leaked on social media just minutes after the decision was made - resulting in them having to scramble to meet with the players.

Congrats to oruvoice and Old Titan for breaking the news on the ORUSports.com message board.  :slight-smile:

Yeah, the Hoover interview was bad (on Hoover's part). I think Hoover did end up feeling bad for not asking about ORU more. Coach Mills did a great job with the interview, considering the nature of the questions. Every time I hear Mills in an interview, I'm impressed with the way he handles himself. He seems like he has a more outgoing and confident personality than Scott Sutton (which is no slight to Coach Sutton, just an observation). He's engaging, humble, overtly Christian, and puts the players first.

As for the staff he's putting together. I like that he was able to get Hester, a guy with such great experience from Houston. Him getting a guy from a bigger program like that shows that he means business. That the vision he has for the program is convincing highly qualified assistants to join him. Patterson is a good hire too I think. He sounds like an X's and O's specialist, but he has experience scouting too, so he could be a good Talent Evaluator. While on the surface it looks like Patterson was just some video guy from Baylor, his bio on the Baylor website shows he is very qualified, with a great diversity of experience.

Hoover also took a jab at Mills when he was running down his bio.  He said something like --- "You played basketball at Southern Nazarene....it didn't work out there."

-------

I also listened to the interview Mills did w/an urban station in Houston earlier.  Best interview of the three I listened to. He was much more comfortable with those guys and had done interviews with them during his time at Baylor.  Mills has personality for days (something Scott Sutton lacked a bit in).  The moms are going to love the guy.

It was a free flowing interview about the Houston hip hop scene, friendship w/ Paul Wall, WorldWide Wes, and other celebrities basketball has afforded him the opportunity to get to know.

He has spoken with every ORU player's and signed recruits parents and everyone is on board to stay. (I assumed this is with the exception of Morgan and RJ Smith).  Mills also plans in home visits with all during the recruiting dead period --- this is allowed.

Asked about how recruiting will be different at ORU than Baylor.  "Nothing -- no change."  Baylor flourished with under the radar talent. 6 players to the NBA that were not top 100 recruits and Motley should make number 7 this year.

The guy is making no little plans at ORU....to borrow a slogan.

Does anyone see any Baylor transfers coming with Mills?  I wonder if him or Patterson might sway some to join them?

Somebody at Baylor knows how to evaluate & develop players. I heard one of the players that went to the NBA was a one(!) star recruit.

Also heard that at Baylor they have 13 students managers - one assigned to each player. They are there to help the player in drills, etc. Not if we can do that or not - but it's an interesting idea.

Good interview by Mills and I'm glad he didn't really back off the music thing. That song was in a Sprite commercial. Who cares.

What was that bumper music before the interview....The Rolling Stones? Has Hoover ever Googled some of their lyrics and how could he allow that kind of music on his show? For shame.

Also, good answers by Mills to some pretty lazy questions regarding Mulkey and Briles. Hoover has a personality made for print.

Shoulda kept his day job trolling Bob Stoops with all of his asinine "gotcha" questions at OU press conferences.

Love his response to the Drake question. To paraphrase: "We always listened to the clean (radio) version. What are you listening to?"
