University of New Orleans to Southland Conference?

Buried as something of an afterthought within this story about the University of New Orleans hiring a new athletic director is THIS little teaser:

"Although Morel is not contractually obligated to begin at UNO until July 1, the start of the new fiscal year, he plans to join Fos and athletic department consultant Richard Giannini in Galveston, Texas, on May 22 and 23 to present UNO’s application to the Southland Conference Presidents Council."

Before we get too excited about playing basketball or baseball in The Crescent City during Mardi Gras, the story points out that it "could take two years for UNO to become a full-fledged member" of the Southland, as they rebuild their athletic program & return to Division I in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

Still, the Privateers have a nice history of success in man's basketball dating back when Perry Clark was their coach. Compared to other potential SL prospects Texas-Pan American and Immaculate Word, the Privateers bring a lot to the table, not the least of which is their location.

New Orleans would be a great addition to the Southland Conference....however, the thought of OT, Bogus and OKCEagle partying down in the Big Easy during a road trip might warrant serious sanctions from the ORU alumni association....
