Mike Hollimon in Training Camp With Twins

Looks like Mike is getting some attention.

This quote below is attributed to the Twins Manager Ron Gardenhire who is a native of Okmulgee, OK.

"Though Gardenhire said he liked the way Pedro Florimon and Mike Hollimon have played, the likely internal contenders would seem to be Brian Dozier and Sean Burroughs."

This second article is a nice story about Mike's history up to this point.

"He should be able to find a niche within the Twins organization, though, because the Twins really do not have a lot of switch-hitting shortstops with power. Look for Hollimon to spend a good deal of time at Rochester this season. It isn’t out of the question that he could be called up to the Twins at some point, expecially if he hits well and the Twins suffer some injuries at the shortstop position."

The Twins are weak at 2nd base and SS and with Justin Morneau's concussion history are also a little weak at 1st base for depth. I think Twins camp provides a good opportunity for him due to their lack of depth.

In other moves, the Twins officially placed Kyle Waldrop on the disabled list with a strained right elbow and re-assigned infielder Michael Hollimon to minor-league camp. They now have 31 players in camp.

The Twins also reassigned infielder Michael Hollimon to the minor league camp. Hollimon showed a good bat but made mistakes in the field.

As mentioned above, Hollimon was sent to minor league camp. Dozier and Burroughs were kept but I believe Hollimon was the only other SS option left in the major league camp when he was sent down. So, if Dozier or Burroughs underperform or have an injury, it looks like Hollimon is the next one in line to be brought up to take their place. Burroughs dealt with drug addiction for 4 years but is now clean. He can play several in-field positions but 1st and 3rd are his preferred spots. So, I'm not sure if the Twins are really carrying a true back-up SS. Maybe their 2nd baseman Alexi Casilla is the backup SS. I'm not sure. Still seems like it could be a good opportunity for Hollimon to make the major league roster at some point if he can clean up the fielding mistakes in the minors. He was hitting really well in the major league camp.
