WIU Postgame With HC Sutton

I think that may be one of the best interviews of Scott Sutton I've ever listened to. Thanks, Coach, and thanks Geoff for that. Many excellent points made in that four minutes. REALLY proud of the team for earning a share of the conference championship last night - now we need to go to Ft. Wayne on Wed. night and finish it off!

Coach mentioned what we've already talked about - this game was a "grinder". The thing that really bugs me, something that I don't really understand, is what I mentioned in another thread, and Coach Sutton commented on to Mickey on the TV broadcast - if we'd taken a bigger lead, if we'd gotten a little separation, then they would have had to play OUR game, not us playing theirs. Instead of an up-tempo game in front of a big crowd like WE like to play, it was a slow-down, slug-it-out-in-the-trenches kind of a game. We're the one with the thoroughbreds, the multiple weapons; they've got Ceola Clark. So how do we end up playing into THEIR game plan? One of the mysteries of basketball, i guess. Domo wasn't at his best last night - maybe if he'd hit a couple more buckets early it might have given us the separation we needed to run away from those guys.

Anyway, great interview - nice to hear Scott reflect on the season and his players.

a different angle on the Tree tip dunk -- KTUL.com

That big guy at the :22 second mark was sitting near us and was doing all he could to get the crowd into it. He kept turning around and telling everyone to stand up and cheer for the team when they were at our end, because they needed our help. Got a little old afer a while. Got so I wouldn't stand up just because he kept telling me to. I have a bad attitude, I guess.

I'm sure he meant well . . . |(

TMH, I'm ashamed to say that I felt the same way and I even knew he was right. When I started standing up, I realized the people around me would too.

I do love it though when one of the players stands up and tells us to yell! :?:

Section H and G started cheering as a result of that guy's encouragement. I think it did provide an offensive lift for the team. I usually make noise more so when the other team has the ball in order to distract them, but it was unusual to make more noise when ORU had the ball. It worked out in the end.

Let's pray that we get more of those type of individuals at the Mabee. The reality is the Mabee Center was built to have phenomenal acoustics, which is exactly the opposite of what you want in a basketball arena. We have to have twice the amount of noise as regular arenas to fill it up.

Hey....didn't that guy above who manages the Mabee Center used to be one of the Bee Gees?......

That guy that was telling everyone to cheer was a student when I was here at ORU. He was always like that. Great guy and passionate about athletics. I imagine if the game wasn't so 'grind it out', it would have been easier to get fans up to cheer.

Yeah, he was and still is a wildman! Wish we had a few more hundred like him!

We need him and Joey Odom to show the current students a few things!

Hey Voice, please tell us what the refs were looking at during that interminable delay. They reviewed every monitor on the table and afterwards no changes were made. I guess they were trying to determine if Domo's shot really was a 3-pointer. (It clearly was because he was six inches behind the line - not even close.) Even Molanari was frustrated with the time it took to 'review' whatever it was they were looking at. That one ref had a real attitude problem.

They were actually reviewing a WIU three pointer from 2 minutes of game time BACK! One of the strangest things I had ever seen. Not to mention, the shot that they were reviewing, both officials had EMPHATICALLY called at the time.

Seems to me like some officials really enjoy the chance to "review" plays. Personally, I wish they'd do away with it, unless in the final minute of play.

Hey voice, here is something I think we CAN do to get more involvement in the game - we're told to "stand up and show your Golden Eagle Pride" during the Spirit Sprint - I'd like to see us encourage people to continue standing for the remaining three-plus minutes of the game and cheer the team on at the end, especially in close games like those last week. I usually don't feel like sitting back down after the Spirit Sprint, but I also don't want to be the only one left standing either.

A lot of schools have fans stand until the first basket is made at the beginning of the game - how about our crowd standing until the final buzzer sounds? What do you think? People will need some encouragement from somewhere, though, and I don't think it should be from someone in the crowd, like the guy last Sat.

I like the idea. And, a few times I have urged that.

Although, something like that would work better as a 'grass-roots' effort. In my opinion, it would be better if the cheerleaders fanned out into the stands, after the spirit sprint and encouraged the fans to stay up and clapping/cheering. You will often see NBA cheerleaders in the aisles, urging fans. You might even do a "promotion" with it, where the section with the most 'spirit' after the final media timeout gets something from a sponsor...

Exactly what I've thought in the past - get the cheerleaders out in front of each section and urge fans to stay standing after the Spirit Sprint (which I love, BTW, especially in the four-prong attack mode that they've done this season). And I know you've done what you can from the microphone - I think people just need a little more umph - cheerleaders might just do it.

This kind of goes along with idea that we don't currently have any really unique crowd participation activities to cheer the team on - along the line of Arkansas calling the hogs, or fans standing until the first shot goes in, or even the old Titan Train at ORU back in the day. I don't even know if people would be willing to participate at this point - but I've thought for a long time that it would be nice if we had our own tradition of some sort that we did every game. I don't know that standing for the last three minutes is much of a tradition, but at least it's a start.

It's a VERY GOOD start.

Also, the interactive crowd chants can be pretty easy. Have a cheerleader or mascot hold up a sign that says "Golden" to one side of the arena and then "Eagles" to the other side.
