ORU at Oakland Predictions/Comments.....

Memo to Coach Kampe: never tell a fragile team that game #5 of an EIGHTEEN GAME conference season is a "must win".

'Cause, if you LOSE - and if it's BY A BUNCH - they might go south on you for the remaining 13.

"You said it was a 'must win', Coach - and we didn't, so...."

No wonder NDSU scored so many points - Jimminy Christmas, what bad defense!

Here's how bad it was: we gave up 54 POINTS in the second half - AND STILL INCREASED OUR LEAD FROM THE HALF!!

it was ESPN's fault they played poor defense...didn't ORU play Oakland the last two year at home during semester break?

BryanWXOU:

Kampe definitely agitated about ESPN Bracketbuster. Talked about playing #ORUMBB on a Tuesday with Michigan football and lack of crowd.

Added not fair they have to now fly back and play NDSU, who will be in Tulsa before #ORUMBB arrives back.

That second part of Kampe's comments is talking about us having to play NDSU on such short turnaround.

Kampe HATES the BracketBuster - always has.

Great win against Oakland on the road. We however are committing too many turnovers. If the game had been closer, I suspect we would not have been as careless with the ball during the last 10 minutes of the 2nd half. I would like to see Rod slow the game down when we are up by 16-20 points instead of still trying to push the ball. That leads to a risk/reward situation that might lead to a fast break bucket but also sometimes leads to easy baskets for the opponents. When you have a significant lead, it makes more sense to slow things down and decrease the risk of turnovers.

However, against Oakland's weak defense, I think it was a good strategy to push the ball because there were several fast break buckets to be had. I remember previous ORU teams that couldn't consistently convert fast breaks. It is nice to see the team chemistry that leads to success in a fast break situation.

+1

Oakland is one team where it actually pays to trade baskets.

They're just so unsound on defense, plus they don't rebound that well, so the "saturation principle" eventually pays off.

Sadly, it's what the better opponents have been doing to our women's team this year - with similar results...

CBSsports.com's Matt Norlander take on Oakland and Reggie Hamilton

"Oakland needs to be called out. The Grizzlies are now 8-9 after losing to Oral Roberts in Summit play tonight. ORU is undefeated, and now it’s a matter of the Eagles or South Dakota State taking the league. OU can’t win with Reggie Hamilton running things, even if he could be the league’s best player."

Reggie Hamilton: "Really at a loss for words right now. Made some shots out there; didn't make enough."

Uh, memo to the offensive-minded - maybe you would not have to make so many shots if you could manage to hold your opponent to fewer...

Two names - Hudson, Benson.

Oakland seems to bring out the best in an opponent's 3-point shooting. Must be the wide open looks from the perimeter. Maybe their thinking is that some teams won't be able to make shots. Hard to understand why Kampe can't/won't get those guys to play defense.

It appeared on the streaming video that they often got lost on defense after just a few passes. Rather than force the issue and look for a quick shot, our offense is designed to take advantage of just such breakdowns, resulting in a LOT of open looks inside and out. Bad combination for the Grizzlies.

Random observations:

1. First half score was 33 to 26; we made them play our style of basketball. The second half score was 56 to 54; we played their style of basketball and out scored them.

2. Morrsion needs to shoot more. He scored 20 points on only 11 shots; he was 6 of 8 from the 3-point line. He shot zero free throws.

3. Nice to see Niles back in shooting form; 7 of 9 fg% - 2 of 3 from the 3-point line.

4. Pearson distributed the ball well with 8 assists; he had 12 assists against South Dakota. Too many turnovers (5) though - but I can live with that given his defense and offensive production.

5. We out rebounded Oakland 31 to 26 but committed 18 turnovers with 21 assists. Oakland only committed 7 turnovers. Need to take better care of the basketball.

Oakland in a lot of trouble now with 3 league losses already....they are in must win situations this weekend...Kampe has to right the ship or it's slowly sinking....Hamilton is a one man show and that won't work.....big game in the Summit is ORU vs. NDSU tonight....can't wait to watch on FSC... :nerd:
