UMKC Post-Game Coverage

Couple of takes on last night's game from long-time Kansas City sportswriter Blair Kerkhoff: one version for the Kansas City Star, and the other the story he "strung" for the Tulsa World.

With much of the Tulsa World sports staff in Arizona and Texas to cover the local football teams in their respective bowl games, ORU beat writer Mike Brown drew the unenviable task of covering the TU-Mercer game last night at the Reynolds Center. My condolences, Mike...

So that’s why the Kangaroos played four guards much of the night against a talented Oral Roberts squad that was coming off wins over then eighth-ranked Xavier and Texas Tech.

Someone FINALLY mentioned our win over Xavier WITHOUT A QUALIFIER! I'm sure he wanted to add one, though, just couldn't get the sentence to flow right with it.

Feels good, doesn't it? ;-)

One slight correction to the TW article. UMKC went to a 1-3-1 half court trap, not a 2-1-2 zone, which created some match-up problems and yielded them some easy turnovers. The key to that defense was the placement of a big athletic forward on top of set, which made it difficult for Rod to get good passing lanes.

Interesting thing about that is, throughout his broadcast Geoff called it a 2-1-2, but in the post-game Coach Sutton called it a 1-3-1. Is it possible that they were using both?

Whatever it was, it gave us fits.

The article says that they had a couple of players injured and that resulted in UNKC using a 4 guard set against us. We don't have the depth to match that kind of lineup so we were 'stuck' with using our rotation of DBH/Craion/Roundtree - and putting up with the turnovers.

It's a 1-3-1:

1. The point man on the zone pushes the man with the ball to the left or the right;

2. The wing on the ball-side comes up and tries to double-team the ball.

3. The off-side wing sags down to provide help.

4. Meanwhile, the middle man has lane responsibility, while the baseline guy has from the block to the corner on the ball-side.

The two guys trapping out top is what can make it look like sort of like a 2-1-2, but in a TRUE 2-1-2, there's no forcing of the ball one way or the other, it's just read-and-react on the perimeter, with only the ball-side guard pressuring the man with the ball.

A 2-1-2 is what you run if you're slow and/or in foul trouble, and the other team can't or won't shoot the "3". A trapping 1-3-1 is what you run if you are small and/or are trying to go for steals (aka, UMKC or our women's team).

TheEagleman will take any win on the road....another one at South Dakota tomorrow night would also be nice.....unless our guys are disinterested and looking ahead to Oakland....we should win by double digits.....but this contest at SD is a classic trap game....we have to be prepared....not looking to the Grizz game..... :fubar:

UMKC now plays in Swinney Rec Center, which is very much like playing in the Aerobics Center. In the past they have played in Municipal Auditorium and Hale Arena, with an occasional game in Kemper Arena. Those venues were way too big for UMKC and it seemed like those places were empty. Swinney seats about 1,250 by my estimation, and as the picture shows, the place was almost full. I think that their fans could be a larger factor in this setting, however, last night they were very quiet - which was good for us.
