Here is a story from the Charleston Daily Mail about Bob Huggins and West Virginia' s basketball team:

WVU basketball: Lack of experience will be challenge for Huggins, Mountaineers

by Mike Casazza

Daily Mail sports writer

Charleston Daily Mail

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- Bob Huggins is about to begin his 30th season as a college basketball coach and his fifth year at West Virginia.

So many times before or after his 691 victories, Huggins has said there isn't much he hasn't seen along the way.Yet when the Mountaineers open the 2011-12 season with tonight's exhibition against Division II Northern Kentucky, not even Huggins can say what will happen.....

This quote doesn't make me think we can sneak up on them at all:

"Kent State will be every bit as good and probably even better. They're very good. Oral Roberts has their top seven leading scorers back. When I said Oakland was good last year, everyone said I was trying to be Lou Holtz, but (center) Keith Benson is a pro. You want to do that. The flip side is you want to win. Kent State is going to be a top 50 team, but it only helps you if you win it."

Our experience and potential defensive intensity will definately be an advantage.

Oh, you can sneak up on anyone early in the year - if you're good enough.

Coaches like Huggins can talk about respecting your opponents till they're blue in the face, but until his guys actually face some adversity, they'll think they can just show up and beat anyone.

The year we beat Kansas, it was only the second game of the season for the 3rd-ranked Jayhawks, following a 30-point beatdown at home against Northern Arizona. ORU, on the other hand, was coming off a disappointing loss in their opener at Loyola Marymount. I'm sure Bill Self told his guys to "watch out", too, but they obviously didn't listen.

It's early. Nobody really knows what they have (or haven't), except experienced teams such as ORU. And these are 18- and 19-year-old kids we're talking about in some cases, who on their best days can still be maddeningly inconsistent.

Who knows what's gonna happen...

Heck Huggins can say whatever but i bet you half his team has no idea who ORU is and where it's located. Great to play these teams early as they will get no respect. I think ORU has a good chance against both WV and Gonzaga in the Kennel. Gonzaga is not as good as they have been either.

I agree. It doesn't matter how much you pay lip service to not overlooking a team, when you're the high flying Mountaineers from the mighty "BIG LEAST", it's tough not to think you're going to roll over "some school in Oklahoma". Looking forward to this game!

Not good at all. Well, if we had any chance of 'sneaking' up on the Mountaineers, that just went away. Huggins will have their full attention and they will really come at us.

Now that I have cooled down a little bit, took some time to collect my thoughts... this West Virginia team is bad

Tonight we were without Deniz Kilicli and it showed, our only player who did anything in the post was Jones, usually was quadruple-teamed when he got it.

Starting Lineup:

Kevin Jones 6'8 F, scored 20+, and showed why he is 1st team all Big East

Kevin Noreen 6'10 F, looked like he hasn't played a game in over a year, no offense, no defense

Keaton Miles 6'7 F, our defensive specialist, reminds me A LOT of Yemi, LONG LONG LONG

Jabari Hinds 6'0 G, shows signs of being a future all-american, but is a freshman, its obvious

Truck Bryant 6'0 G, shows that he is a leader, the offense ran through him, but can not finish on his drives

Offense: In the first half it was extremely sloppy for WVU, on offense there was no movement what-so-ever. And I'm sure Bobby let them know at halftime, because the offense flowed much better in the second half. Jones and Bryant are clearly our best players. Jones is the only consistent player on the floor. Noreen and Forsythe play like they are 6 foot in the post, not 6'10". Hinds shows much talent, but played like what he is, a freshman. Our shooting is good, Hinds, Jones, and Bryant all shot over 40% from 3. Gary Browne came off the bench and played well, showing he could score at times, and probably will start vs ORU.

Defense: Other than Keaton Miles, I dont think anyone played defense. Quite honestly, even Jones and Bryant looked bad on defense. NKU had 10 offensive rebounds. Screens were a HUGE problem for us, no one hedged, or one switched another did not, it was horrendous. We do have a good post defense, but movement killed the 'Eers. I really enjoyed Tommie McCune, brought a lot of intensity on defense, only played 7 minutes.

Overall WVU is long, and athletic. Scoring doesn't seem to be an issue, but we are a Big East team, and did not play like one tonight. The refs gave WVU every call, and could not take advantage of it. ORU has not only a good chance, but a great chance to come in here and win. The crowd was quiet until the last minute of the game. The game next friday is a doubleheader. Women at 6:30 and the Men at 9pm. Should be a much louder, ready to go atmosphere for the game.

I've been hearing that many of these teams are dropping their exhibition games because they are purposefully not running their offensive sets to avoid being scouted early. Either way you're right. WVU will be focused.

If ORU shoots the ball decently and stays out of foul trouble.....we can beat W.Va......the key is to hang in during the first 10 minutes....make the Mountaineers work.....we certainly have a shot in Morgantown next Friday night..... ;-) ;-)

i think you are on to something. WVU held out a player and did not play the zone defense they have been working on.

Nov. 04, 2011 11:11 p.m. - by Patrick Southern - Kilicli could have played

F Deniz Kilicli could have played in Friday's exhibition loss to Northern Kentucky despite inflammation in his knee, according to coach Bob Huggins. "I didn’t think it was worth him hurting it. It’s a long year, and seeing those other guys I didn’t think was a bad thing. He should be good to go next Friday for sure." Mountaineers RapidReports

Nov. 04, 2011 8:10 p.m. - by Patrick Southern - Mountaineers steer away from 1-3-1 zone

The Mountaineers didn't play the 1-3-1 zone defense players said they had worked on extensively in the first half of Friday's exhibition against Northern Kentucky. The reason may have been because F Deniz Kilicli was out with a knee injury. Mountaineers RapidReports
