Release: 05/26/2010

ELMHURST, Ill. - The Summit League's co-regular season champion and top seed in the tournament, South Dakota State, led the league with eight selections to the baseball all-league teams announced Wednesday. Oral Roberts had six student-athletes receiving honors, while Centenary and Southern Utah landed five and four, respectively. Oakland placed two on the squads, while IPFW, North Dakota State and Western Illinois each collected one honoree.

ORU's Tyler Saladino captured both the Player and Newcomer of the Year awards. Boone Whiting from Centenary was named Pitcher of the Year and South Dakota State head coach Ritchie Price collected Coach of the Year honors.

Saladino, a junior shortstop, collected the Player and Newcomer of the Year awards after leading the league in six offensive categories. In league games, he batted .491 with 50 RBI and 43 runs scored helping Oral Roberts to its 12-straight Summit League regular season title. A native of San Diego, Calif., Saladino slugged .911 with a .565 on-base percentage and 102 total bases in 28 league games. The April 26 Player of the Week had 55 hits and 11 home runs, both second in the league, along with seven stolen bases and five sacrifice bunts. In all games, Saladino registered 71 RBI, 17 roundtrippers with a .388 average and .705 slugging percentage. His 158 total bases and 14 stolen bases were first and third in the league for all games, respectively.

Whiting earned Pitcher of the Year honors after recording a league-leading 112 strikeouts on the year, ranking ninth in the nation. Whiting's 32 walks give him a 3.5 to one strikeout to walk ratio, while his 12.92 strikeouts per nine innings ranks fourth nationally. Of those 112 strikeouts, 62 came against league opponents. Whiting was a perfect 4-0 in the league and 6-1 on the season with a 3.23 ERA, second in the league. He also held batters to a league-low .221 batting average on the season. In 41.1 innings pitched, the Oakdale, Calif., native allowed just 17 earned runs. The junior also had one shutout and one complete game on the year, while also earning a save vs. Western Illinois on May 18.

In just his second season at the helm of the Jackrabbit program, Price was named The Summit League Coach of the Year for the first time in his career. This season he guided South Dakota State to Division I school records of 37-19 overall mark and 19-9 in the league. As the youngest head coach in Division I, Price led the Jacks to the No. 1 seed in the upcoming league tournament, the first time a team other than ORU has been the No. 1 seed since 1998. SDSU leads the league in 11 different offensive categories and ranks in the Top 15 in seven of those categories in the nation. The Jacks also earned 10 Player/Pitcher of the Week awards during the 2010 campaign.

Frankly, I thought reliever Trever Vermeulen from SDSU might get Player AND Pitcher of the Year, and he got neither. "Sally" is well-deserving in an unusually competitive race for POY honors this year.

There are a handful of really solid players this season at SDSU, Centenary and ORU - hope they can all reach "The Show" once they're done in the Summit League.

Wonder how high Tyler will be drafted.

He's projected in the top 5 rounds. There are a number of teams interested in him, including the Rockies, which means he may be in Tulsa again just like Sean Jarrett.
