Green Guides ORU Past Chicago State, 69-58

02/04/2006

TULSA?Caleb Green (Tulsa, Okla.) notched his 11th double-double of the season with 25 points and 10 rebounds to lead Oral Roberts University to a 69-58 victory over Mid-Continent Conference play, Saturday at the Mabee Center.

The win improves the Golden Eagles to 14-9 overall and 9-2 in Mid-Con play and keeps the Golden Eagles one-half game behind league-leading IUPUI. Chicago State falls to 4-16 and 3-6.

After a sluggish start to the first half, the Golden Eagles gained some breathing room. With the game tied at 14-14 with 8:51 to play in the first half, ORU senior guard Andrew Meloy (Houston, Texas) sparked a 20-6 run to close out the half. Meloy scored all seven of his points during the run, hitting a running jumper, a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws to help stake the Golden Eagles to a 34-20 halftime lead.

The Cougars made a game of it in the second half, thanks mostly to free throw shooting. Five of Chicago State's first seven points in the half came from the free throw line. Cameron Clay's free throw with 15:36 to play made it a 36-27 game.

After ORU pushed the lead back up to 11 points on a layup by Larry Owens (Mesa, Ariz.), Chicago State again cut the deficit at the line. Four straight free throws ? two each by Kourtney Calvin and Kevin Jones, Jr. ? put the Cougars within 40-33 with 11:49 left.

Chicago State twice closed to within five points but could get no closer as ORU earned the win.

Green was 17-of-19 from the free throw line, tying his own school record for made free throws. He was just 4-of-10 from the field. Owens chipped in with 11 points, five rebounds, five assists and three blocks.

David Holston led CSU with 17 points off the bench and Jones, Jr. chipped in with 15 points on 5-of-14 shooting.

ORU's defense was strong once again, limiting Chicago State to 29.5 percent (18-61) shooting ? the second time in three games the Golden Eagles have allowed less than 30 percent shooting.

The Golden Eagles return to action when they visit Oakland, 6 p.m., Thursday.
