Defense and Rebounding Send ORU Past UMKC, 74-56

KANSAS CITY, Mo.?Oral Roberts University dominated the glass and limited Mid-Continent Conference foe UMKC to 29 percent shooting in a 74-56 victory, Monday at Kemper Arena.

With the victory ORU (12-9, 7-2 Mid-Con) stayed one game back of league-leading IUPUI, and in the process broke a four-game losing streak to the Kangaroos (9-11, 6-4).

ORU bolted to a 20-8 lead to start the game, due mostly to keen 3-point shooting. Jonathan Bluitt (Oklahoma City, Okla.) and Chris Riouse (Broken Arrow, Okla.) combined for four straight treys, and an Eric Fowlkes (Milwaukee, Wisc.) runner gave the Golden Eagles a 12-point lead with 9:10 left in the first half.

UMKC used a 9-1 run to cut the lead to 21-17, but ORU used a 7-2 burst which included another three by Riouse and a dunk by Caleb Green (Tulsa, Okla.) for a 28-19 halftime lead.

The Golden Eagles continued to control the game in the second half, opening a 53-36 lead on back-to-back 3-pointers by Moses Ehambe (Arlington, Texas) sandwiched around a free throw by Green and a driving layup by Fowlkes.

The closest UMKC got in the second half was when Quinton Day drained a 3-pointer with 15:33 to bring the Kangaroos within 34-26. But ORU went on an 8-1 run for a 42-27 lead with 12:05 to play and never looked back.

The Golden Eagles owned a 50-29 rebounding advantage, getting 35 defensive rebounds compared to 16 for the 'Roos. UMKC shot made just 20 of 68 field goals, including 3-for-19 from 3-point range. ORU, meanwhile, shot 47 percent for the game, including 55 percent in the second half.

Green led ORU with 15 points ? all in the second half. The junior forward added nine rebounds. Lary Owens (Mesa, Ariz.) scored just four points but pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds and had four assists. Mickey Michalec (Skiatook, Okla.) had 11 points and 11 boards. Riouse scored 13 points, hitting 4-of-9 from 3-point range.

Day led UMKC with a game-high 26 points, but was just 8-of-26 from the field. He was the only player to reach double digits for UMKC.

ORU returns to action when they host Southern Utah, 7:05 p.m., Thursday at the Mabee Center.

Wow. 50 rebounds is crazy stat! UMKC musta been lay'n some bricks.
