Stats question

At one point the other night New Mexico made a layup and missed - tip, miss, tip, miss, tip and in.

When scoring that sequence, is UNM credited with three offensive rebounds before the basket, or does a player have to have control of the ball before it's considered and recorded as a rebound?

I've always wondered how tips were recorded, or if they were, on the stat sheet.

That is up to the official stat crew working the game. But generally, if it is a solid 'tip' attempt on the basket, it is recorded as a rebound and shot attempt.

There is some subjectivity involved, however. Same with crediting an assist.
