ORUTerry
Should have sent Rob Walton and his college squad..... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Korea's two-run ninth beats U.S., 8-7 Stevens can't hold lead after ninth-inning comeback August 13, 2008 (excerpt) BEIJING -- Korea scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to rally and defeat Team USA, 8-7, in the Olympic opener on Wednesday evening at Wukesong Field 2. Team USA had fought back with three runs of its own in the top of the ninth inning to take a one-run, lead but the Koreans mounted their own comeback, highlighted by a sacrifice fly from Jongwook Lee to earn the victory. The U.S. returns to action on Thursday morning to face the Netherlands with first pitch set for 10:30 a.m. local time (10:30 p.m. on Wednesday night, EDT). Things looked good for the Red, White & Blue following the top of the ninth inning. Down two runs entering the frame, the U.S. recovered to take a 7-6 lead. Mike Hessman (Fountain, Valley, Calif.) got things started with a solo home run, which Taylor Teagarden (Dallas, Texas) immediately followed with a single and Brian Barden (Templeton, Calif.) with a double. With runners on second and third base and two outs, the U.S. went ahead on a two-run single from Matt Brown (Bellevue, Wash.). Link

Old Titan
+1 ...and I wonder if the powers that be at USA Baseball are echoing the same sentiment.
tmh8286
There's a link on that page to an interesting article on the similarities and differences in Olympic baseball to U.S. baseball. It's pretty interesting: Olympic game similar, but not identical
tmh8286
Team USA experienced first-hand one of the major rule changes in their game against Cuba today. The teams were tied at 2 going into the eighth, each team scored a run in the eighth, then neither scored in the ninth or tenth. The new rule is that when teams are tied going into the eleventh, they place any two players on first and second, with no outs, and can bat starting from any batter in the lineup. Under those conditions Cuba scored two in the top of the eleventh. In the bottom of the eleventh, Team USA scored one, but was unable to get a second run across and lost to Cuba. A rather unusual injury occurred to one of the USA players - first one up to bat in the eleventh, he sets up to bunt, but the ball hit the bat and caromed back, hitting him in the forehead. As the camera zoomed in as he went down, blood was already pouring off of his face. The ball must have hit him just right to open up a nasty gash. ORUTerry
Same team (Cuba) that the Walton-led squad beat - I think twice.
tmh8286
One other observation about yesterday's game - for a small, Communist, island country on the far side of the Earth, they had A LOT of fans in the stands yesterday. Hard to imagine how so many could afford to make that trip, unless they were sponserd by thier government. Either that, or there's more money floating around Cuba than I realized. I suppose that some of those fans could have been from other Latin Ameican countries, cheering agianst the US.
