Mike Minyard
Full Story: http://www.berkshireeagle.com/ci_9620155 The National team is on its annual NECBL tour and was scheduled to play last night in Torrington. Head coach Rob Walton, the baseball coach at Division I Oral Roberts, had to hope last night's game was an improvement on yesterday afternoon's contest. "We didn't play very well. We gave up (six) hits and I think they hit one ball square the whole day. And we punched out eight. When you give up five runs and one ball was hit solid and you have eight strikeouts, it's a strange game," said Walton. For Walton and his staff, these NECBL games are an opportunity to figure out which players will compete for the United States in a pair of overseas tournaments. "Our approach at the plate isn't where we need it to be. Guys are probably trying to do a little too much, and put pressure on themselves," he explained. "You have to give credit to (Pittsfield's) pitchers. They were able to pitch backwards a little bit — throw breaking balls behind in counts and they got guys to chase late. Give credit to what they were able to do on the mound."
