Mike Minyard
ORU's Van Kirk honored By JOHN E. HOOVER World Sports Writer 5/30/2008 Last Modified: 5/30/2008 3:44 AM Oral Roberts outfielder Brian Van Kirk was named first-team All-American by Collegiate Baseball magazine Thursday. Van Kirk is ORU's ninth first-team All-American, joining Bob Volk (1977), Bill Springman (1978), Mike Moore (1981), Tom Nieto (1981), Keith Mucha (1982), Todd Burns (1984), Jeff Stallings (1999) and Dennis Bigley (2004). Going into Friday's NCAA Tournament game against California-Irvine at the Lincoln Regional, Van Kirk owns the Summit League's triple crown so far this season, batting .421 with 17 home runs and 72 RBIs. "It's nice," Van Kirk said. "When I came into the year, me and coach (Rob Walton) sat down and put up a goal, a realistic goal we thought I could reach. It was .400 batting average with 15 home runs and 70 RBIs. "Numbers are nice ... But (the) year's not over yet. Now's when it counts. I'm 0-for-0 right now."
