TrueBlue82
Although not officially released by the league, it appears that ORU has (again) won the Commissioner's Cup Award. By my calculations, last weekend's 3rd place finish in both Men's and Women's Track clinched the victory for ORU, finishing ahead of Western Illinois by four points (no other school was within 10 points of ORU). ORU's repeat victory is quite a feat, as ORU only competes in 16 of the 19 sports, while Western Illinois is the only Summit school to compete in all 19 sports. (Note: ORU does not compete in Softball and Men's and Women's Diving - other Summit League schools range from competing in 14 to 19 of Summit sports). In other words, WIU has a decided advantage in this annual competition. ORU also won the Men's All-Sports Award, while South Dakota State won the Women's Award in their inaugural season. Congrats to the Jackrabbits for making a very favorable first impression in Summit League competition! In fact, both Dakota schools fared well, as SDSU and NDSU finished 3rd and 4th respectively (behind ORU and WIU) in the Commissioner's Cup competition. If anyone questioned whether SDSU and NDSU should be in the Summit League, this result is the definitive answer. We've talked for YEARS about ORU needing to DOMINATE the Summit League before we could even begin to think about moving on to greener pastures. Our consistent success in the Commissioner's Cup, in addition to the NCAA bids in major sports, is proof of that very domination we once only dreamed about! Congratulations to Mike Carter and the ORU athletic department!
