My Two Favorite BYU Baseball Stories

Stop me if I've told you this one before....

1.  Back in the early Eighties, ORU and BYU both plowed through a "Who's Who" of college baseball powerhouses in the week-long Riverside Invitational in Riverside, CA to meet in the finals.  During the championship game, I was seated in the press box next to the tournament director, an older fellow who I presume was a big deal in the Riverside Chamber of Commerce or Sports Commission.  As the game wore on, he had a real hang-dog look on his face, as he sat there with his elbow on the desk and his chin in his hand.  Realizing I had sensed his dejection, he finally turned to me late in the game, and with a sigh uttered the first thing he had said to me the entire time: "I bet we haven't sold ONE DAMN BEER tonight!"  Dawning on me that an ORU crowd was evidently cutting into his concessions profits, I extended my condolences.  He sighed again and said, "Well, that's alright.  At least you guys buy Cokes - those folks from BYU don't drink ANYTHING!"

2.  During the same game, the rather peppy BYU cheering section, complete with pom-poms, decided they would challenge the rag-tag group of fifty or so ORU faithful, which consisted almost entirely of the Southern California players' family members from around the area.  The Cougar fans all stood and faced the ORU section and let loose with a cheesy "WE GOT SPIRIT, YES WE DO - WE GOT SPIRIT, HOW ABOUT YOU??"  No response but rolls-of-the-eyes from the ORU parents and siblings.  Once again, they blast " "WE GOT SPIRIT, YES WE DO - WE GOT SPIRIT, HOW ABOUT YOU??"  This time, after a quick huddle regarding strategy, a handful of ORU dads and brothers responded with the following:  "WE GOT ONE WIFE, YES WE DO - WE GOT ONE WIFE, HOW ABOUT YOU??"  And, without even missing a bit, the BYU fans shot back, "WE GOT MORE!! WE GOT MORE!!"  :-D

When I tried to tell them to Cris Belvin yesterday by opening up with "Have I ever told you my BYU stories?", his eyes got real big and he just blurted out , "YES!"

I gotta get some new material...  :|
