theeagleman5 Posted July 2, 2009 Author Posted July 2, 2009 Chappy pitched two scoreless innings last night and got the win when one of the Phillies hit a walk off HR in the botttom of the 11th.....Chance is now 4-1 on the season with Reading.....7-1 total if you include his A ball record with Clearwater.....
Bogus Smith Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 Looks like Chapman is making the best of his Chance with Reading!! Seriously, this coming off season will be the most important six month's of Chance's baseball career and determine whether he will make it to the next level or be destined for a career primarily in the Minors with some limited opportunities in the Majors. Chance could be trade bait for the Phillies if they don't need a middle reliever.
theeagleman5 Posted July 5, 2009 Author Posted July 5, 2009 Chappy came in with the tying runs on in the 8th last night and bailed out starter( former first round pick Joe Savery of Rice) as the Phils hung on to beat Connecticut, 7-5.....another scoreless inning for Chance....2nd Place Reading is now 47-33 and 5 gaves behind Akron in the Eastern League southern division....
tmh8286 Posted July 5, 2009 Posted July 5, 2009 I enjoy your updates on Chapman, Eagleman - thanks! After a little bit of a rocky start it appears that Chance is doing well at the 2A level. Is there any chance of him being moved up to 3A this season if he continues to see success?
theeagleman5 Posted July 5, 2009 Author Posted July 5, 2009 Your welcome, TMH....of course, TheEagleman isn't in the heads of Phils braintrust but I would have to think Chance will finish this season at AA Reading unless a serious rash of injuries forces a call up....but a good opportunity for Chance to be in AAA Lehigh Valley next season because the Iron Pigs flat out stink....at 25, Chappy isn't exactly a young kid and has pitched well at each level of hte Phillies organization so far...I just hope he's not included in trade for a veteran arm prior to the major league deadline....overall he is 7-2 this season with an ERA under 3....not too shabby....by the way, Chance pitched a scoreless 9th this afternoon but Reading lost to Connecticut, 12-5.....
ORUTerry Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 Thanks for all of your updates on Chapman. I am always interested to hear how he is doing.
theeagleman5 Posted July 10, 2009 Author Posted July 10, 2009 Chance has really settled in at Reading....he pitched another scoreless inning in a loss on Wednesday night....Phillies came back and won last night to take 2 of 3 from the first place Akron Aeros....Joe Savery, former Rice All American got the win last night and is 12-1 for Reading....
theeagleman5 Posted July 12, 2009 Author Posted July 12, 2009 Reading's starter got bombed in the first 2 innings last night and Chappy came in to settle things down and threw 3 scoreless innings giving up only 2 hits and a walk with 2 Ks....his ERA drops to 3.84 in AA ball....the Phils tried to come back but lost 5-4 to Harrisburg at the state capital.....Chance even got an at bat last night but grounded out....he is 0-2 at the plate this season with Reading.....
tmh8286 Posted July 12, 2009 Posted July 12, 2009 Two questions for you baseball-savvy types - would Chance be considered a middle reliever? It seems like he comes in and only throws one inning - is it all that hard for a new guy on the mound to fool three batters? In other words, seems like it wouldn't be that hard for a guy coming in to go a scoreless inning - right or wrong? Last night seems like a much better showing of Chapman's ability. What might the reason be that they only use him for one inning so often? Pitching by committee or some other reason?
theeagleman5 Posted July 12, 2009 Author Posted July 12, 2009 Chappy was a starter for his first two years in the Phillies organization....but this year he has been used mostly in middle relief...TheEagleman can only guess that the Phils must see him in that role should he make the big leagues....guys who come in and can keep the team in the game when behind or bridge the gap from the starter to closer can be very valuable commodities and make a lot of money in the majors....Chance has mostly been pitching 6th, 7th, 8th, etc....he has also gotten in when the starter gets knocked out early or the game goes into extra innings....he has shown to be versatle....I'm not sure what kinds of pitches Chance throws but to make the bigs, you have to have 3 to be effective....anybody know what he has in his repetoire?....except for two poor outings, Chappy has pitched well and should be in AAA ball next year at the Phillies Allentown team...the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs....
theeagleman5 Posted July 17, 2009 Author Posted July 17, 2009 Another scoreless 1.1 innings for Chapman last night in a home Reading loss to New Britain......AA ERA down to 3.65.....gave up 1 hit and had 2 SO......can't remember the last time the Chance gave up an earned run.....he's having a really good season......
Bogus Smith Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 Another scoreless 1.1 innings for Chapman last night in a home Reading loss to New Britain......AA ERA down to 3.65.....gave up 1 hit and had 2 SO......can't remember the last time the Chance gave up an earned run.....he's having a really good season...... I wonder if Chance has a chance of getting on the Phillies expanded 40-man roster at the beginning of September (pun intended, but a serious thought)...
theeagleman5 Posted July 18, 2009 Author Posted July 18, 2009 Well, Bogus....if the Phillies are still in a tight pennant race, they usually only call up 5 or 6 players tops....however, should they get way out in front say 10+ games by Labor Day...it's possible they might think about resting certain players for the playoffs and could call up a few extra arms....still, I would doubt that the Phils will call up an AA pitcher....and unless there are injuries or a huge trade for Roy Halliday which takes a few key young arms out of our system...i don't think Chance is going to get promoted to AAA until 2010....nothing TheEagleman would love more than to see Chappy at Citizens Bank Park in the near future!......
theeagleman5 Posted July 19, 2009 Author Posted July 19, 2009 Another 1.1 scoreless innings for Chance tonight with no hits or walks and one K.....but, another Reading loss....Chapman's ERA drops to 3.46 at the AA level.....
theeagleman5 Posted July 22, 2009 Author Posted July 22, 2009 Chance struck out the side with a scoreless 5th inning in relief tonight after a long rain delay as the Reading Phils lead Altoona, 3-1 in the 7th....Chappy stands to be the winner if the Phils can hang on.......
theeagleman5 Posted July 26, 2009 Author Posted July 26, 2009 Chapman continues to be a jack of all trades....come on to get one big out on a flyball against the Bowie Baysox on Friday night....another scoreless outing for Chance who hasn't been scored upon in over a month now......
theeagleman5 Posted July 28, 2009 Author Posted July 28, 2009 Chance Chapman plays the closer role tonight in relief of Phils' #1 pitching prospect Kyle Drabek and gets the save in a big 4-3 win at home over the Portland Sea Dogs....Chappy retired the side 3 up and 3 down with 1 K and lowers his AA ERA to 3.18 to go with his 4-1 record.....love it! :-D
