Baseball Ranked No. 40 in Collegiate Baseball Preseason Poll

TUCSON, Ariz. – Oral Roberts’ baseball team received a No. 40 ranking in the Collegiate Baseball newspapers Fabulous 40 preseason NCAA Division I baseball poll, the organization announced on Friday.

Last year’s NCAA Regionals first round opponent Arizona captured the newspapers No. 1 spot, while South Carolina, Arizona State, Mississippi, and North Carolina rounded out the top five.

The Golden Eagles will play five teams ranked in the top-40 and play three more opponents that received votes. Two of the opponents for the 2008 season were placed in the top-10 with Texas at No. 8 and Wichita State at No. 9. Baylor (28), Pepperdine (29) and Louisiana-Lafayette (32) were the others ranked in the top-40, while Arkansas, Texas-San Antonio and LeMoyne received votes.

ORU is looking to win their 11th straight conference title after becoming just the fourth team in NCAA Division I history to win at least 10 consecutive titles in 2007. Walton returns nine letterwinners, five position starters and five pitchers from a 2007 squad that posted a 40-17 record.

2007 Mid-Continent co-Player of the Year Brendan Duffy, Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American Jerry Sullivan, and all-conference honorees Brian Van Kirk, Kelly Minissale and Adam Younger highlight the returners.

The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.
