ORU women fall to Creighton by 3

By Staff Reports

12/22/2007

The Oral Roberts women's basketball team lost its first home game of the season Friday, falling 60-57 to Creighton at the Mabee Center.

Junior Rachel Watman scored 16 points, dished three assists and added four steals.

Janae Voelker had her second double-double of the season, scoring 15 points and grabbing a career-high 14 rebounds for the Golden Eagles.

ORU (7-4) trailed by two when Ally Thrall hit a free throw with five seconds left in the game to give Creighton a 60-57 lead.

Voelker, however, missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Kristina Voss led the Bluejays with 16 points.

The Golden Eagles return to action when they travel to Stillwater on Dec. 28 to face Oklahoma State at 7 p.m.

Sophomore returns: Sophomore Kelly Kindell has returned to the ORU team after departing for personal reasons in early December.

"After some dialogue between the coaches, Kelly has decided to return to the team, and we're pleased with that decision," ORU coach Jerry Finkbeiner said.

This was an unfortunate loss for the Eagles, because it was very winnable for them.  They lost the lead with a tie score at 55, at the 5:56 mark in the second half, and ORU wouldn't score again till there were only eleven seconds left.  In the later half of the second period they missed three point blank layups, two free throws, and the front end of a one-and-one.

Even so, they fought hard throughout the game against a very scrappy Creighton team.  It truly was a battle.  ORU played hard, and kept fighting back from behind throughout most of the game.  I'm sure it was a heartbreaking outcome for the team.
