ORUTerry
Summit League: City may lose postseason tourneys By MIKE BROWN World Sports Writer 6/27/2007 The former Mid-Con may change location of the basketball venue. Tulsa's four-year association with the Mid-Continent Conference basketball championships will apparently end after the 2008 tournament is played at Union High School next March. There were indications Tuesday that the Mid-Con, which recently changed its name to the Summit League, has awarded its 2008-09 and 2009-10 tournaments to a group in Sioux Falls, S.D. The Sioux Falls Sports Authority has scheduled a press conference for 10 a.m. Wednesday, according to Teri Ellis-Schmidt, executive director of the Sioux Falls Convention and Visitors Bureau. It's likely that the 2009 and 2010 tournaments will be played at the Sioux Falls Arena, which has a seating capacity of 6,300 for basketball. The conference postseason tournament determines the Sum mit League's men's and women's automatic qualifiers in the NCAA Tournament. The only other bid for 2009 and 2010 came from the Tulsa Sports Commission. The commission will operate the tournament for a fourth straight year at the Union Multipurpose Activity Center. TSC executive director Mike Dodson said Tuesday he had not heard from Summit League personnel. League officials have previously expressed delight over how the tournament has been operated the past three years. But there has been growing support for a change of venue after playing so many years in the same town. Oral Roberts University's men's and women's teams have won the title twice each in the three years the tournament has been played in Tulsa. South Dakota State, a new Summit League member, partnered in the Sioux Falls bid. SDSU begins league competition this winter, but won't be eligible for the postseason title until the 2008-09 season. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mike Brown 581-8390 mike.brown@tulsaworld.com
