UMKC To Drop The Co-Ed Rifle Program

School set to tentatively add women's soccer and baseball

April 18, 2007

Kansas City, Mo. - The UMKC Athletics Department announced today that following the 2006-07 school year, the department will no longer sponsor the school's co-ed rifle program.

"One of the most difficult aspects of our business is the elimination of a sport," said UMKC Athletics Director Tim Hall. "In order to align us more appropriately with the mission of UMKC and the Mid-Continent Conference, we need to move in this direction."

UMKC decided to drop the rifle program, as the sport does not fit into the mission of UMKC, and it is not among the sports sponsored within the Mid-Continent Conference. With the ultimate goal for Kangaroo athletics to compete year-in-and-year-out for the Commissioner's Cup, the athletics program needs to add sports that align with the league's sponsorships.

Tentatively, UMKC will add women's soccer to the mix in the fall of 2009-10. Two years later in 2011-12, the program will add baseball. The addition of both sports will allow the program to have an increased partnership with the community, as both sports are sponsored by a large number of high schools in the Greater Kansas City area. Meanwhile, the addition of women's soccer will also have a positive impact on diversity and Title IX.

"I am committed to providing our student-athletes with a "world class experience," said Hall. "The addition of women's soccer and baseball, over time, will allow us to achieve this objective." .  .  .  (read more)

So, getting swept in four games by ORU is now considered a "world class experience".
