And as quickly as they laud such hires, they also express the possibility of losing them. Athletic directors say the situation means only one thing: their program has had success. Colorado State athletic director Paul Kowalczyk did so March 22, when he signed North Dakota State head coach Tim Miles to a contract guaranteeing him $400,000 a year. NDSU athletic director Gene Taylor did so four days later, when he named Saul Phillips as Miles? replacement. For athletic directors at NCAA Division I schools, especially programs like NDSU and Colorado State, finding the right coach has become a Catch-22. On the one hand, they want to find a guy who will lead their program to the NCAA tournament. But once that happens, their coach becomes a hot commodity for bigger schools. ?At some point, you have to tell your coach ?we can?t afford to pay you,? ?
