Franc is one step closer to being another ORU student-athlete Olympic medalist as Latvia squeaks out a win against France 22-20.  Lacis had 8 points and 4 rebounds in the contest. 

Latvia is now the only undefeated team in their pool and should go automatically to the quarterfinal rounds.  The top two teams in each pool go to their pool's semi-finals, the next four teams in the respective pools go through a play-in to determine the other two teams in their pool's semi-finals.  The remaining teams will be out.

The Latvian team is playing VERY well together - and is a true TEAM.  Each of the four players on the roster have played an equal 33 minutes in their combined five games.  Franc provides a nice combination of shooting prowess, rebounding ability and solid defense, and is averaging 5.2 ppg/3.2 rpg.  He has scored 24.2% of the Latvian offensive output and picked up 20% of the overall team rebounds.  He has a great shot at earning an Olympic medal!

Latvia is guaranteed the #1 seed in the medal round and a bye to the semifinals with a huge 21-14 win over Serbia.  Franc with 8 points (including 3 for 4 beyond the arc), 3 rebounds and a couple of key blocked shots in the final two minutes of the game.  Impressive!

Latvia goes undefeated (7-0), but it all starts over in the medal round.  They play France tomorrow.  2 more wins to GOLD.

Besides Madeline Mims, do we have any other alums that are gold medal winners in the Olympics?  Andretti was a silver medal winner.  As many international student-athletes as we have had through the years, I have to think that there are some that we have not recognized.

Latvia lost to France 21-14.  Now they will go for Bronze later today.

Latvia couldn't shoot the 2 these last two games and lost to Lithuania.  No medal.

I can only imagine the mixed emotions of finishing fourth in an Olympic event.
