Men's Day 1 in Review

Player of the Day

ORU senior forward Caleb Green: Scored 25 points, hitting 7-of-10 from the field and 11-of-14 from the foul line. Green has 20 or more in each of his past seven games. He now has 2,437 points -- 51 shy of the Mid-Con career record of 2,488.

News and notes

Quote of the Day: "(Oral Roberts) showed why they're the best team in the conference. They came up with some big plays and Caleb showed why he was the player of the year."

Unfavorable omens: Recent history says third-seeded Valparaiso doesn't have a chance in Sunday's 8:30 p.m. first-round game against Missouri-Kansas City.

Third seeds haven't won a tournament game in six years. The Crusaders have also had trouble winning in Tulsa over the years. They are 0-11 against Oral Roberts at the Mabee Center and 1-2 in tournament games at the Union Multipurpose Activity Center.

Valpo had never won in Tulsa before last year's 77-66 first-round tourney win over Southern Utah. They lost to ORU 77-58 in last year's semifinals.

Too close to call: History says Sunday's 4-5 game between Indiana-Purdue and Southern Utah is impossible to predict. The fourth and fifth seeds are 11-11 against

one another in first-round games.

IUPUI and Southern Utah split narrow decisions this year, each winning on the other's floor. Southern won 56-53 in Indianapolis and IUPUI won 75-74 in overtime in Cedar City.

Difference in approach: Southern Utah leads the Mid-Con in 3-point shooting percentage (.388), but takes fewer attempts than any team in the league and is only six with 172 made 3-pointers.

Missouri-Kansas City leads the league with 248 treys on 704 attempts (.352). Valparaiso has 222 treys, IUPUI 206, Oakland 187 and Oral Roberts 182.

"I just can't stand it when my guys take bad shots," said head coach Bill Evans. "But maybe I should start letting them take a few more."

Maybe not. The Thunderbirds ended the regular-season in a slump, hitting only 25-of-83 behind the arc while losing five of their final six games.

TV Time: Live streaming of tournament games are available at mid-con.tv.com for $4.95 per game and $19.95 for a tournament pass.

Fun zone: One upgrade for this year's tournament are the pool tables, video games and Internet access area made available for participating players in the lobby of the Marriott Southern Hills.

RPI Check: ORU 104, Oakland 120, Valpo 150, S. Utah 206, IUPUI 215, UMKC 268, Centenary 295, W. Illinois 329 (as of Saturday, according to collegeRPI.com).

Should we expect that our RPI would move up if we win the Mid-Con?  ...if so, to what extent?
