ORUTerry
Green gets top honor once more by MIKE BROWN World Sports Writer 3/2/2007 ORU forward is named Mid-Con Player of the Year for the third time. Oral Roberts senior Caleb Green was chosen as the Mid-Continent Conference's basketball Player of the Year for a record third time Thursday. "It wasn't that big of a surprise, was it?" said ORU coach Scott Sutton. "I think he'll go down as one of the best players in Mid-Con history." Green led the league in scoring (20.2) and rebounding (9.5) for the second straight season and posted a league-high 15 double-doubles (double-digit games in two categories) while leading ORU to a third straight regular-season Mid-Con title. The 6-foot-8 forward is only the 15th Division I player chosen conference player of the year three times. Green's senior teammate Ken Tutt was also chosen to the all-conference first team in balloting by the league's coaches, sports information directors and media. ORU sophomore forward Marchello Vealy received the league's Sixth Man Award for his work off the bench, and junior center Shawn King was chosen to the All-Newcomer team after leading the Mid-Con with 65 blocked shots. "I'm proud of Ken, Marchello and Shawn. All of those guys are deserving," Sutton said. Greg Kampe of Oakland (Mich.) was named Mid-Con Coach of the Year for guiding the Golden Grizzlies to a surprise second-place finish. They were picked to finish fifth in preseason polls, but won 17 games, a Division I school record. Green has averaged 19.5 points and 9.3 rebounds over four seasons while setting conference career records for rebounds (1,159) and free throws made (824) and attempted (1,095). He's also the second-leading scorer in Mid-Con history with 2,214 points -- 76 shy of the league record set by Missouri-Kansas City guard Michael Watson in 2000-04. Green was named to the all-conference first team for the fourth straight year. Tutt's inclusion is his third time on the first team. Tutt averaged 16.2 points, 2.5 assists and 2.5 rebounds in 2006-07. His 311 career 3-pointers are third in conference history. He's also the 10th-leading scorer in Mid-Con history with 2,412 points. Vealy averaged 8.1 points and 5.9 rebounds off the bench. King shot 63.6 percent over the course of the season and averaged 8.8 points and 6.0 rebounds in conference play. ORU (20-10) takes the No. 1 seed into the conference tourney, starting Saturday at the Union Multipurpose Activity Center. The Golden Eagles will face eighth-seeded Centenary in the first round.
