ORU @ WSU

A very nice, come-from-behind win for the Ladies on the Wichita State court this evening.  They were up by as much as six points in the first half before ending the second quarter with a one-point lead.  WSU led by 14 points in the third quarter as ORU could not buy a basket (3-22 from the field in the 3Q).  The fourth quarter was all ORU as they outscored the Shockers 31-18 and won on a Megan Weinrich layup with 4 seconds left with a final score of 76-74.

The Ladies end the out-of-conference season with a respectable 7-4, but are obviously challenged with D-1 competition.  The conference season should be interesting and I believe the Ladies will better their 5th place preseason placement.  Definitely a nice way to go home for Christmas.

With 8 minutes left in the game, ORU trailed 61-47.  So, in 32 minutes of play, ORU had scored 47 points, just under 1.5 ppm.

in the final 8 minutes, ORU outscored the Shockers 29-13, averaging more than 3.5 ppm in the homestretch.  HUGE effort!

The ORU WBB non-conference schedule has been very lopsided.  They played four games on the road against Big-12 competition (three in the top 30 of NET), and lost those game by an average of 32.5 points.  As an offset, they played four home games against non-D1 competition, and won those games by an average of 41.5 points. It was virtually guaranteed BEFORE the season began that their record in those eight games would be 4-4, and it held to be true.

The remaining three games are where it gets interesting.  They played Tulsa (NET 117) at home and UTRGV (313) and Wichita (252) on the road.  All of those games hung in the balance until the final minutes, but ORU came out victorious in all three. The competition in those three games will be very similar to what the Ladies will face in their remaining games (the Summit schedule and the two Big Sky games), which bodes well for the road ahead.  At this point, ORU is ranked 160 in NET, which is third in the Summit behind perennial powerhouses SDSU and USD (both in the Top 100).  I think it is probable that ORU will earn the #3 or #4 seed when the regular season is over, and has a legitimate shot at recording a 20-win season for the first time since 2011-12 (Jerry Finkbeiner's final season).

Great analysis as always, TB82!  Thanks for taking a deeper dive in the evaluation of the WBB's season so far.
