Commissioner Cup standings

It is not in any way biased.  It is straight forward and awards points equally for each men’s or women’s sport and in what place your school finished in the standings.  Since ORU does not have women’s softball, we have less potential to win the cup.  However, I believe ORU has won the men’s points award before.

ORU also does not sponsor Men’s or Women’s swimming and diving.  So, in all, ORU competes in 16 of the 19 sports sponsored by the League.  Only St. Thomas fields teams in more sports (18) than ORU.  Recap of teams fielded by school (in order of finish in the Commissioner’s Cup):

SDSU 16

NDSU 14

USD 16

Denver 11

UND 15

ORU 16

Omaha 16

UST 18

KC 14

WIU 16

ORU’s inability to be an annual contender for the Cup is not because ORU sponsors less sports, but is primarily due to the lackluster performance in track/field/cross country sports and women’s sports.

Here’s the analysis from 2023:

Major sports (MBB, WBB, Base):  ORU earned 21 of a possible 26 pts, best in the conference.

Fall non-TF/CC sports (MSOC, WSOC, VB): ORU earned 15.5 of a possible 26 pts., third best in conference.

Spring non-TF/XC sports (MTEN, WTEN, MGF, WGF): ORU earned 18.5 of a possible 31 points, third best in conference.

TF/XC sports (MOTF, WOTF, MITF, WITF, MXC, WXC):  ORU earned 11 of a possible 51 points, eighth in the conference (would be tenth, except Omaha only fields the three women’s teams, and Denver competes in none).

In Women’s sports, NONE of the eight  ORU teams in the eight sponsored sports finished in the top quartile of the standings.  The best result was WSOC, finishing in a tie for fourth place out of ten teams.

If the TF/XC sports were not counted in the Commissioner’s Cup standings, ORU would have easily finished first in the Men’s All-Sports Award, but would’ve still finished seventh in the Women’s All-Sports Award standings.

Personally, I don’t think the ORU Athletic Department places much value in these League awards, and would much rather focus attention on NCAA tournament appearances in major sports, especially MBB and Base.  I can’t disagree with that approach, as the marketing benefit from such appearances are off the charts:  But, if the Athletic Department ever decides to make winning the Commissioner’s Cup as a goal, it’s pretty easy to see where they need to focus their attention to improve.

In defense of our Track & Field efforts, most track and field teams are made up of student-athletes that play football that run sprint and field events.  We will never be in the upper half of T&F events but could improve in our distance and XC programs with the addition of great runners.

Additionally, we compete well in many niche events which makes our XC/TF athletes selective in the areas that they excel.  We have made a significant investment in the T&F area with the ONEOK facility and will hopefully continue to build that program as we attract more international influence to the program.

My son ran at a small struggling D2 school, the now closed Nyack college and his times would have put him at 2/3 on the ORU squad
