ORU Notebook: Tooting the horn

by MIKE BROWN World Sports Writer

11/22/2006

A full-color leaflet detailing the career of senior forward Caleb Green was e-mailed Tuesday in PDF form to about 100 media representatives across the country.

Media relations director Cris Belvin said he hoped to capitalize on the momentum of Green's 20-point, 11-rebound, eight-assist performance in the Eagles' 78-71 upset of third-ranked Kansas.

Weekly PDF updates are planned and Belvin may start mailing actual leaflets to likely postseason voters, depending on how Green's season progresses.

It's part of the school's effort to give Green the best chance of winning various postseason awards. He is preseason player of the year in the Mid-Continent Conference and one of 50 preseason candidates for the John Wooden Award, presented annually to the nation's top player.

Belvin said a similar campaign a few years ago helped women's basketball star Krista Ragan receive Kodak All-American honors.

Record night: Green broke the school record for career free throws with his first of the game at 15:34 of the first half. He made 13-of-19 in the game and now has 597. He started the night tied with Greg Sutton, who made 584 foul shots from 1989-81.

With 12 rebounds, Green went over the career-900 mark and inched within one of the Mid-Con all-time record, which he will probably break Saturday against Panhandle State. He now has 909. Valparaiso's Chris Ensminger holds the record with 910 in 1992-96.

More Marchello: Sophomore forward Marchello Vealy had another solid game on the heels of his 22-point night at Kansas. Even more important than his stat line -- seven points, seven rebounds, two steals, one assist and one blocked shot in 25 minutes -- is that he played like a ringleader.

At one point, he flashed out to make a steal, passed ahead to Tutt and assisted Tutt's layup with a nifty one-handed touch pass after Tutt passed back to him.

"He's an all-around player and he helped us a lot with his defense and rebounding," Tutt said.

Rebound advantage: Vealy played another solid game on the heels of his 22-point explosion at KU. The sophomore forward had seven points, seven rebounds, two steals, one assist and one blocked shot.

The Eagles outrebounded (41-33) a team that whipped its first two foes on the glass by a combined 37-rebound margin.

Defense helps: Ross Mouton made four 3-pointers, but struggled overall (6-of-20) with the long-armed Yemi Ogunoye shading him most of the game.

"I'm sure it was painful for anybody who watched it," Scott Sutton said. "But it was a win, and at the end of the year, it's going to count the same as the Kansas game in the win column. We can learn a valuable lesson from a win like that."

Highlights: Ken Tutt's steal and pass for Yemi Ogunoye's breakaway dunk, his first basket of the season. . . . Green's double-pumping reverse layup from under the basket.
