Marquette holds off ORU rally

By Staff Reports

Caleb Green's 28-point, 12-rebound effort is not enough for Oral Roberts.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Oral Roberts University couldn't make 3-pointers until it was too late Friday night, and a frantic Golden Eagles comeback fell shot. (sic)

Hitting just 3-of-17 behind the 3-point arc, ORU fell to Marquette's Golden Eagles 73-70, wasting a 28-point, 12-rebound performance by Caleb Green in the semifinals of the Great Alaska Shootout.

ORU (1-2) will play for third place at 6:30 p.m. Saturday against the loser of Friday's second semifinal between South Carolina and Monmouth.

"This is a disappointing loss. We had a great opportunity to win the game and we just didn't play every well,"said ORU coach Scott Sutton.

"We're still not shooting the ball very well, especially from the perimeter, and as well as we rebounded (against Southern California in Wednesday's first round), we did almost as poorly agtainst a team that was really not a great rebounding team."

Marquette (2-1) outrebounded ORU 39-37 and had a decided edge in second-chance points. Sutton thought a failure to block out after a missed foul shot by Marquette's Dominic James was one of the key plays in the game, even though ORU led 44-41 and 12:51 remained.

Ryan Amoroso rebounded the James miss, got fouled by ORU's Andrew Meloy and made both free throws, making it 44-43.

"It kind of went downhill from there," Sutton said.

Marquette went ahead to stay on a basket by Dan Fitzgerald with 11:29 left, and broke the game open when reserve forward Ousmane Barro scored six of his 12 points in an 8-0 run that pushed Marquette's lead to 66-55 with 3:05 left.

Amazingly, ORU gave itself a last chance, pulling within 71-69 when Ken Tutt was fouled behind the arc and made all three free throws with 34 seconds left.

Fitzgerald and Meloy traded foul shots, and James made it 73-70 with the second of two with 9.7 seconds left, and ORU's Jonathan Bluitt missed a 3-pointer in the closing seconds.

Sutton's team lost in the semifinals of a prestigious holiday tournament for the second straight year.

ORU shot 41 percent from the field and hasn't been over 44 percent in its first three games. The Eagles missed 13 of their first 14 from beyond the arc and Tutt missed six of his first seven before heating up down the stretch.

He scored 11 of ORU's final 15 points to finish with 21, hitting two 3-pointers and 5-of-5 free throws over the final 2:52.

Until Marquette's late surge, neither team led by more than seven points. The game was tied six times in the first half as Green scored 16 points before intermission, and five times in the second.

Sutton said his team "lost our composure" during the run that gave Marquette its 11-point lead.

Barro's two foul shots made it 60-55 with 4:30 left, and he and James scored successive dunks after ORU misses.
