Carolina comeback clips Hawks in semis

ANCHORAGE (Nov. 25) ? The inside-outside combo of Brandon Wallace and Tarence Kinsey sparked their team back from a 17-point second-half deficit as South Carolina claimed a 62-56 victory over Monmouth in the late semifinal of the 2005 Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout on Friday.

The Gamecocks (4-0) got 22 points and six rebounds from Kinsey, and 10 points, 14 rebounds and five assists from Wallace to advance to their school?s first Shootout title game. USC will play Marquette for the championship gold pan at 6:30 p.m. Saturday on ESPN2.

A short-handed Monmouth squad (1-2) forged a 42-25 lead with 16 minutes to play, but couldn?t hang on despite 17 points from Dejan Delic and 10 from Whitney Coleman. The Hawks were without injured starting point guard Tyler Azzerelli, plus a pair of suspended players in 7-foot-2 center John Bunch and sophomore guard Jon Ager.

Trailing 44-30, Kinsey started a 13-0 Carolina run with a three-pointer, and Wallace followed with a layup. Wallace assisted on four of his team?s baskets during that 4-minute stretch.

Carolina tied it 48-48 and took its first lead since the opening minutes at 52-50 on a transition dunk by Kinsey. A Delic trey put the Hawks back up by a point, but Wallace answered with a tip-in and Antoine Tisby (5 points) made a pair of free throws to put Carolina ahead to stay.

Monmouth will take on Oral Roberts in Saturday?s third-place game at 3:30 p.m. AST.

They play the Princeton-style of offense.... lot of screens/back screens. They will slow the game down and work for an open shot. We will have to be patient and focused on defense and not over-play.
