Summit League Television Deal Update

Pretty in-depth update of where things stand for the Summit League's new TV deal.  It sounds like they are considering their options, which is a good sign.
https://www.inforum.com/sports/bison-media-zone/mens-sports/mcfeely-summit-league-nears-media-deal-it-hopes-will-include-national-tv-games
Some tidbits below:

"National visibility, brand and fan affinity, revenue generation and finding ways to protect our local linear relationships that are important to a good portion of our schools," Fenton said.

Fenton, nor anybody else in the league who's been contacted, will go farther than that. But it's assumed the league could land regular-season men's games on a linear network like one of the ESPN channels (likely ESPN2 or ESPNU) or CBS Sports Network. Streaming options could include ESPN+, FloSports, Midco Sports or Forum Communications Co.

Fenton said the league's new streaming deal will aggregate local broadcasts into one platform and will require schools to meet minimum production standards.

"We want to aggregate a platform where essentially all team sports, including some of the championships, are under one digital platform," Fenton said. "So you as a fan of school XYZ can watch your team on the same digital platform whether they are at home or on the road."

The linear component could include somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 regular-season games and, possibly, both the semifinals and championships of the men's and women's basketball tournaments.

This is so important to the league's long-term viability and will have a meaurable impact when it comes to NIL deals for the athletes.

Have to cut the apron strings with MIDCO - they only care about their own footprint!

They want to be the streaming partner badly.

They also want to increase the footprint of their sports network.  This is kind of a pipe dream, but not far fetched - my hope is that if they are selected, they also get tier 2 TV rights that require them to broadcast a select number of non Dakota games, which could potentially help them work out a carriage deal with Cox.  That would put Midco in the St. Paul (Comcast), the Dakotas, Omaha, and Tulsa, which would be huge.  All cities would be covered except Denver and Kansas City, and Midco already has a small but growing presence in Kansas.  For games in Tulsa, for example, they could pick up ORU's feed instead of producing it themselves (they have done this type of thing in the past).  They have also produced and broadcast games in Omaha, so there is some precedence for this.

Midco has the potential to put more games on TV in Tulsa.

I bet they do!

But the concern is they will do only the bare minimum to keep the rights (and consequently all those local advertisers in their current footprint).

They have a long way to go to convince me they care about truly servicing anything beyond eastern South Dakota, eastern North Dakota, and western Minnesota.

That's a great first step, but not as significant a benefit for ORU fans as you might think. ORU attracts students from all 50 states, and ORU alumni are scattered nationwide.  In fact, in a recent WSJ study and article on where alumni of universities reside, ORU was second in the nation (to Notre Dame) in national geographical dispersion (calculated by the number of metropolitan areas in the USA in which a statistically significant percentage of alumni are located). While the largest percentage of alumni do settle in Tulsa, a broadcast package which provides for a national audience would be most valuable for ORU.

Go ESPN and not CBSSN.  CBSSN is still small time compared to ESPN.  Also, speaking only for ORU, Midco Sports or even Cox does nothing for ORU Alumni.  We truly are nationwide and a lot more of us reside outside of Tulsa and even Oklahoma.  Hopefully the Summit ends up with ESPN.

Guys, I think the article is saying Midco wants to be the streaming partner, not the nationally syndicated broadcast TV partner.

This.  And the TV I mentioned was in additional to nationally televised games.  Reading comprehension..

Did we not have an ESPN+ deal back about 10 years ago? Seems like so...

You referring to this?  Midco provided their feed and still does.  ORU chooses not to participate.  Continue to bash Midco and the league though, everyone.

There's no reason to bash. 8-bit is super trendy again.

Yes. I don't know exactly why that isn't the case anymore.

We will while you continue to ignore the fact that Midco on Cox in Tulsa does very little for our national alumni base.
