ORU Handles IPFW, 3-0

09/08/2006

OREM, Utah ? Maja Devic (Split, Croatia) totaled 10 kills and hit a game-high .429 in leading the Oral Roberts University volleyball team to a 3-0 (30-24, 30-27, 31-29) victory over IPFW in opening round action at the LaQuinta Invitational Friday night.

Devic also added six blocks on the night while Ori Zuzic (Porec, Croatia) chipped in with 14 kills, eight blocks, and four service aces.

ORU (3-6) got the defense going early, limiting IPFW (5-5) to a mere .140 attack percentage in game one, forcing nine Mastodon errors in 42 attempts during their 30-24 win.  The offense then took over in game two, rolling up a .310 clip while the defense again held IPFW at bay en route to their 30-27 victory and two games to none lead.

The Mastodon's looked to make a late push in game three, out-hitting ORU .217 to .142, but the Golden Eagles held on to an 18-16 lead on total kills as they survived with a 31-29 win to finish off the sweep.

JoJo Souza (Sao Paulo, Brazil) also added 10 kills for ORU while Thais Parada (Sao Paulo, Brazil) finished with a match-high 37 assists.  A pair of Golden Eagles reached double-digit deals, as Cris Alves (Sao Caetano, Brazil) had 17 picks and Brittany Arnold (Tulsa, Okla.) recorded 14 of her own.

The Golden Eagles will return to action when they face tourney-host Utah Valley State on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. (CDT).
